The Mecca I work at is located on the outskirts of town, which means we’re no stranger to getting visits from critters of all kinds… especially on the night crew. When one of my co-workers spotted a baby possum sitting on a railing on our outdoor patio one night, I felt compelled to rush home at lunch hour and get my camera… which was just in time to catch Mama dropping by to pick her spawn up. The entire story and photo set can be found in this post, but this was the one photo that turned out to be pure gold. How often do you get to see a mother possum lugging around her child on her back, let alone get a photo of them where both critters are looking right at the camera? I don’t care how ugly people think possums are… I think they’re adorable, and these this family portrait is rightfully one of the best pictures I’ve ever taken!
oh is that a baby photo of Buster? froma time many moons ahgo as he wasn’t dead every day ?
Hopefully these possums are distant relatives of Buster and don’t share his unique gift of dying over and over. There is nothing to inherit from Uncle Buster anyway…
Oh I love that photo……possums are adorable. We see them frequently but rarely with a “young-un” on board!
Pam
I guess she doesn’t need one of those Baby On Board signs when Junior rides around in plain sight, does she?
They do have adorable faces…and those tiny little fingers! Oh the mischief those can get into. 😊
I’m sure they would have loved it had I opened the door for them to get in the store. I don’t think management would have approved, though…
😈
That baby possum is absolutely adorable! I’m a little intimidated by mom though, aren’t possums supposed to be nasty when cornered?
Possums do get pretty nasty if they think they’re in trouble, particularly mothers, and it was definitely in my mind when I stood there and took all the pictures. I had the benefit of already being in place when Mama showed up, and stayed very still other than swiveling to change the camera angle. I guess she didn’t view me as a threat… even with that bright flash going off every few seconds!
Well, I’m glad that you survived this adorable encounter!
They are not ugly, they are cute!!! This is a once in a lifetime photo.
It’s still my only face to face encounter with a possum, and the one time I’ve seen a baby. I’ve still never seen a true baby squirrel…
I remember that photo. You know how I feel about opossums but I suppose I’ll admit that, in this one photo, they’re almost cute!
The little one at least is very cute looking over mama’s back…
I love opossums! We have a few that visit our bird feeders at night, but I’ve never gotten a mom and babies shot. Sweet!
Outside of my cats when they were kittens, I’m pretty sure that’s my only baby animal picture. I’ve run across a few young squirrels, but by the time they leave the nest, they aren’t much smaller than the adult ones. Having the mom’s face next to the baby’s makes it so much more adorable…
The baby is adorable and the mom is pretty cute too! We used to have possums visit pretty frequently but they never brought their babies the way the raccoons did and the squirrels do. I didn’t realize how cute the babies were until I saw your photos of them!
This mama had two babies, because we saw them first. Mom didn’t show up until I’d come back with my camera, and I don’t know where the other little one was… but that would have been even cooler had both of them hopped on her back!
OMG I remember this one. They are sooooooo adorable. Squeeeeeeeee.
I can not believe possums haven’t taken over the internet yet. Cats must have better agents…
