Mission Impossible

Seriously? I’m too old for gym class!

It is my firm intention to use some of the abundant time off I have over the next week to restock my squirrel photo archive.  I bought a brand new bag of feed and have plenty of peanuts on hand… but the weather has completely not cooperated thus far over the past few days.  The murky, wet weather of Wednesday and Thursday was supposed to clear out yesterday… but instead it was cloudy from alleged sunrise to alleged sunset.  And I’ll be gone a good chunk of today, so hopefully the last couple days of 2018 will be more conducive to taking pictures for your entertainment…

Until then, here’s a photo I never posted from my great corn block experiment four years ago this week.  This was before the squirrels figured out how to get to the block that was on a bungee cord at the end of that chain.  This squirrel surveyed the situation from above and apparently decided that climbing down the chain to the good stuff was not feasible.  His loss.  My hope is to get a feeder I can hang from the tree and put loose feed in, but Mecca seems to only cater to the birds and their selection is all squirrel deterrent.  Maybe the bigger store I plan on visiting Sunday will have an open feeder… though I guess I could always dump it in the empty birdbath…

Anyway, enjoy this week’s upside down squirrel (The second one of the day!) and have a great final weekend of 2018 everyone!

Sorry, but it fits just too well:

    • That’s weird. Another blogger I follow posted what I thought was the exact same video about a month ago… it was a commercial for Carling Black Label. It had the same theme… a squirrel running an obstacle course to get to some food while the Mission Impossible theme played. I don’t know if this was taken from that or not…. but, I may have had that ad on my mind when I titled this post since the music started running through my head as soon as I found that photo.

I first came across this youtube-video when it was mentioned in the Guardian comment section under a Tim-Dowling column (where he complains about the squirrel in his garden). Someone mentioned squirrel safe-feeders – and then somebody else said, there were none – and posted this video as proof.

It is part of a documentary by Dr Jessica Holme, Daylight Robbery
This is part 2. Part one was used in the ad

  2. Sounds like Fifty Shades of Grey, squirrel style. 🐿

  3. Squirrels are so smart. It just amazes me sometimes what they’ll do for tasty treats. Hope your weather gets better soon. You deserve at least one nice day – more than one nice day to go squirreling.

  4. I think this guy could have succeeded in working on the chain gang to retrieve some corn because he looks like he’s GAME for anything. Perhaps he didn’t want to show off in front of the guy with the camera? He’s definitely looking at YOU!

    • I recognize this squirrel from another photo I used in my post on the corn block… he’s standing by the usual feeder which I intentionally left empty and he seems pretty upset about it. I don’t know why I never posted this one because it’s so great how he’s upside down and looking straight down the chain. It’s neat when I can find gems like this that I forgot about, though…

      • Photo surprises are very cool. Happens when you take a lot of photos. It’s like finding a little nugget of gold in a pile of dirt – no wait – that’s a terrible analogy…..but you know what I mean! 🙂

He’ll work it out when he’s hungry enough…

That’s so cute! I hope you get some good weather for taking squirrel photos. Between the perpetually gloomy weather and having to shoot my squirrel photos through the warped and permanently filthy glass of my slider, I haven’t been able to get any good photos. I have a good subject too – a squirrel I call Whitey because he has white across his nose and on his front feet. I’ve got to find a way to crack the door open without Gary getting out so I can get a good shot of him.

    • Well, the sun was peeking out of the clouds when I drove back home about an hour ago. Of course, it was also in the process of setting at the time. It is at least reason to be somewhat optimistic for tomorrow…

I’ve had blonde, brown and red patches on my squirrels… but not white, so I hope you can get some good pics of Whitey!
