Hey, who doesn’t love being fed out of a giant ashtray?
One of my biggest goals during the nine days I had off between the 26th and 3rd was to get some new pictures of my furry friends I’d been neglecting of late. The weather did its damnedest not to cooperate at all. It was rainy and/or completely overcast for every single day of my staycation except for this past Thursday. Since my old corncob feeder broke last year and I haven’t found a squirrel accessible feeder yet, I decided to improvise with a new method of feeding the squirrels… buying loose squirrel feed and using the neglected birdbath I pilfered from my old neighbors as a de facto feeder. It didn’t take the squirrels very long to find it…
This food got rained on two days before I took this picture. The squirrel doesn’t care.
Along with the icky weather that led to more blah photos than I wanted, apparently my current generation of squirrels is not used to me opening up the window to take pictures like the old gang was. Every single time I spied one feeding from the birdbath, my opening the window scared them away. I had to wait for a while, with cold air blowing into the house, for them to come back to get the few pictures I got. Hopefully, I’ll have better luck with that over time.
It’s the stupid human again. I’m out of here!!!
At least this week’s Saturday Squirrel seems to be enjoying the new way I’m feeding him…

I put sunflower seeds in our birdbath too – AND the squirrels (and birds) seem to especially love fishing them out of the water after a rain. Maybe “seed soup” is just as tasty as plain seeds????

I guess they don’t mind a beverage with their seeds, though I’m sure they’d like me to dump some beer in the birdbath instead. I saw my first bird eating from it yesterday a little after sunset. All I could see was a bright red dot out there, and I knew it was a cardinal…
Marinated seeds……I’ve had seeds sprout that were in the water for a few days. Nothing wrong with sprouts – another dimension to their diet I suppose!
Much easier than dangling every which way trying to get at a hanging feeder…
You mean you don’t like eating upside down while hanging on to a wire by your toenails? I find it quite relaxing actually…
The bird bath feeder should provide many hours of entertainment once they get used to it. Especially when they start fighting over it!
No fights so far while I’ve been in the window… but I’ve seen one jealously watch another eating from the tree…
Cool idea! But ours is always full of water from rain and most mornings there are geysers of water coming from it as the birds take their baths!
Mine isn’t very deep, plus it’s tilted a bit sideways, so it doesn’t hold rainwater for very long. One drawback I’ve noticed is the seed mess has nowhere to go. I thought the food was lasting a long time at first… then I noticed it was just full of husks and shells!
Your opportunists will eventually put two and two together and realize dinner has been served. Maybe they’re hoping from napkins to wipe off their furry little faces?
Soggy napkins to go with soggy seed just doesn’t seem like a good idea…

LOL! Every once in a rare while, I’ll catch two squirrels sharing space together. But never food. NEVER EVER FOOD.
That’s a good idea. if it ever stops raining, you can actually attach food along the edges and leave some drinking water in the bath part. Really good idea. Try taking the screen off the window and cleaning it, then shooting through it. That’s what i do. it isn’t easy, but it doesn’t scare them away.
We have an old bird bath that has a crack in it, so it won’t hold water, but it’s great for birdseed.
