No matter the season, no matter the weather… squirrels can be counted on to come out and look cute searching for food. You can also best believe they aren’t going to let any of their furry comrades anywhere near their own personal stake. I watched last weekend as one squirrel laid claim to the entirety of the feed I put in the birdbath feeder… while another squirrel froze his butt off in the snow trying to get a taste of that good stuff. All to no avail… the greedy sciurine in the bowl was not about to share. No matter how adorable the poor, freezing squirrel looked in his desperation…

Fine, be that way. I’ll just lay under the tree over here and starve and have my death weigh on your conscience the rest of your life…
Poor, hungry Saturday Squirrel. I guess he could always eat the yellow snow…
Have a great weekend everyone!
Gosh…..it’s tough out there isn’t it?! I see the same thing here…..although we have two bird feeders nearby so if someone is “shut out” of the birdbath they can generally find another spot for a snack.

Our poor squirrel here had to resort to whatever he could dig up out of the snow. He did jump in the birdbath twice and upset the apple cart, so to speak (Not to mention get the greedy squirrel to bail out briefly)… only to get glared at until he backed off again. Naturally, I missed both action scenes since they occurred between pictures…
i feel sorry for the squirrel in the snow who only wanted a little nibble while the greedy squirrel kept it all for himself. There’s a parable here with this story. I hope the greedy squirrel got an awful bellyache and lived to regret his gluttony.
I don’t know if squirrels are subject to karma or not. About the best one could hope for is that he became too fat and got stuck in a tree hollow somewhere…
Aw no! The poor little thing walking away disappointed at the end…
Who knew watching squirrels in the yard could make you so sad…
So sad story…but great photos!
The heartbreaking brutality of nature captured for all to see. These were by far the best pictures I’ve gotten since I started filling the birdbath with feed…
The squirrels do seem to make out better than the little birds. The BIG birds do pretty well, even in serious winter, but the little ones do very poorly. We filled up the feeder today because tomorrow it’s going to be bad out there. Or (sigh) maybe we’ll be spared.
We were spared… at least the snow, not the cold and wind. Now everyone in town has a double stash of milk and bread and nothing to keep them indoors to use it…
The bird bath makes a great pedestal for squirrels to pose on. So cute! But poor little guy that had to walk away hungry. Your squirrels must be more polite than the ones around here. They don’t give up without some crowding and chasing.
This guy didn’t give up easily! I’ve got a few pictures of them both on the ground after he twice jumped into the bowl and made them both fall out. But I was between shots both times they duked it out in the birdbath. The only negative so far with using the birdbath as a feeder is when it rains like it did all day and all night yesterday. What good does it do to warm up from the teens to the 40’s if it’s just going to rain…
Your guys need some lessons in squirrel-ery from the hoodlums in my neighborhood. Around these parts, they be like this: (CAUTION…HBO words included).
That guy is so cocky! He needs someone to tell him off one of these days… or maybe a couple rumbling squirrels to both run up his pants leg at the same time.
Adorable shots!
Thanks! It’s worth it to open the window and freeze for 15 minutes to get some good squirrel in the snow pics…
