Timing

Not now…….. not now……

Do you see the squirrel in this photo?  Check where the limb coming out of the right side of the picture ends.  There he is, mostly hidden by that batch of leaves!  Staring forward……. focused.  Is he going to make one of those sciurine leaps of faith that makes them nature’s acrobats?  You bet he is.

I knew he was going to do it, too.  In fact, I find myself in this situation quite a bit when I’m taking pictures of the fellas up in trees.  Capturing a tree-to-tree leap by a squirrel is very difficult, though I’ve somewhat succeeded a couple times before.  This guy was going to jump, and I really, really hoped I’d be lucky enough for it to happen while my camera was doing its thing.

I pressed the button….. he jumped.  I eagerly awaited the result on my screen.

And you’re looking at it.  I was a split second too early.  At least I caught the brief moment of tension as the squirrel calculates and triangulates his mid air leap…

When it comes to the ultimate Saturday Squirrel photo, it’s all about good timing.  And most of the time, you’re not gonna have it…

Have a great weekend everyone, and enjoy the bonus earworm.

  1. Squirrels perform the ultimate “leap of faith” all day long – gotta love that devil may care attitude – wish I had it (or at least a half order of it). Thanks for earworm to start my day.

  2. I’ve wasted hours trying to get squirrel action shots. Those little devils are quick!

Wishing you and the squirrels a happy Saturday! 🙂

  4. Woohoo…a twofer! ‘May the Fourth Be With You’ today.

    • Earworms and squirrels go together like Star Wars and corny phrases! When I was trying (and failing) to come up with a SCT idea for Friday, all I could think of was Troll greeting everyone with “May the Third be with you!” A great gag without a story to go with it…

  5. Perfect photo! I love to watch the squirrels that live in my moms back yard, they are quick and cunning. They take my moms baby pears, she doesn’t love them as much as I do, lol.

    • They tend to be the bane of gardeners and have no concept of private property. But they’re just so darned cute! The happiness they bring is worth a bushel of baby pears…

  6. Awwwww just look at that cute little squirrel nose. I am always AMAZED at how squirrels jump from limb to limb, and tree to tree without falling. I will never stop being entertained by them.

    • I can’t remember if you’ve ever had Vlad’s commentary on watching squirrels before. He would have a new entry to add to his list of things that are cute…

    Well, you say he jumped…

    • He did! He also pulled out a harmonica and danced a jig. Then he flipped me off and made his glorious leap. But darn it, I was too slow to capture any of that…

I watch squirrels jump branch to branch and am amazed. Look before you leap, as they say. Your photo is a good one.

    • Given the wind and storms we’ve had already, it’s never a good idea to just assume a branch that was always there before is still there. A squirrel scout is always prepared…

  9. I see him. But I have gotten good and spotting squirrels. It’s not that I mind them eating. I really don’t. But they don’t stop. And as soon as one leaves, another one grabs on. They are eating SO much food, I finally had to start shooing them away at least in the afternoon. They get the early morning to chow down. After 11 in the morning, it’s birdie time. They don’t leave easily. I finally have to threaten to come out the door and push them off the feeder. There’s plenty to eat out there, too. It’s not the middle of the winter anymore, but I guess we serve a better buffet!

    • Every squirrel in New England has probably already found out about your free buffet. That is going to be a lot of squirrels to try and run off. Have they gotten into fights with each other over the food yet? My squirrels tend to be very territorial, and only the alpha is allowed to eat from the feeder whenever he’s around…

  10. Squirrels are masters of jumping, like cats, they succeed always, but a human with a camera doesn´t succeed taking a photo. Have you noticed cats count with their butt everything before jumping, needed speed, corner, height, they just shake slowly their butt calculator, and there they fly to the right spot.

How fun to see that moment of focus. I’m always too slow to catch it. Had I taken this photo the only part of the squirrel left in the frame would have been the blurred tip of its tail!
