Before there was John Stewart the late night host, there was John Stewart the musician who made quite an imprint on popular music from the 60’s and 70’s. Stewart was all over the San Francisco hippie scene long before it was cool in the late 50’s, and would have probably worn some flowers in his hair had his band The Kingston Trio not wondered where they had all gone. He also penned one of The Monkees’ biggest hits in “Daydream Believer,” a song that I never really came around to liking until after its singer Davy Jones passed away a few years ago…

Stewart did a lot of solo work as well, but it wasn’t until 1979 that he had a big hit of his own, the #5 hit “Gold”…
If that song doesn’t have you tappin’ on the cans, nothing will. Stewart even got a little help from Fleetwood Mac vixen Stevie Nicks, who can be heard singing backup. According to the song’s Wiki article, and contrary to popular belief, her bandmate Lindsey Buckingham is not responsible for the guitar work in “Gold”…

As great as this song is, it doesn’t seem to have popped up on any of the popular corporate radio formats it would qualify for… rock, oldies, easy listening. Making the lights go down even more on this song’s legacy is the fact that even Stewart himself has come to loathe the song… seeing it as a fluff piece he did in a moment of weakness to satisfy the record execs who wanted a pop hit, and refusing to perform it in concert. Alas, even its creator thinks this great tune is fool’s gold…

It is definitely better than Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” (though I kinda like that song too). I actually knew about that song before I had ever heard of “True”, which is the only song they’re really known for in the US…
they used their Gold for a skids commercial here , so it has something slippery…

[I don’t know if this is how you want things to be, but when I visit your website about all I see now is ads. I realize that you’ve written stuff in between the ads, but they dominate the page. Also, when I click on the I accept banner at the bottom of the page, I’m taken to some kind of spam that wants me to download a flash player. I tell you this not to be a bummer, but as an observation.]
I never have and never will have any ads on this blog. Apparently, and unfortunately, WordPress reserves the right to spam the blogs hosted on their site with garbage. I use the AdBlock extension and never see any of these ads… I highly recommend it when browsing anywhere online.
I don’t think you can rely on WP to not put ads on your blog unless you pay the piper, so to speak. I use Safari, no extentions. Funny how we all assume we’re seeing the same thing on a webpage, but we’re not.
I had to use my old old laptop during an extended Windows update a couple weeks ago, and not logged in to WP plus without my AdBlock, I saw the mess they make of us “free” blogs. I pay extra for my domain and private registry, but WP itself won’t ever get a dime from me because my experience is that they don’t care about the bloggers who aren’t helping them make money.

Oh yes I remember this one for sure and I too remember thinking it was Fleetwood Mac, especially hearing Stevie Nicks’ backup. This is pure “gold”………

Fleetwood Mac had so many different members, that John Stewart may as well have been one of them, and we’ll credit “Gold” to them! And Mr. Stewart won’t lose any royalties since he’s now deceased…
I love this song! He sounds a bit like musician Chris Rae to me. I heard this the other day on my way home from work on our classic rock station, love it! Kudos to DJ Scatchy for this pick! 👍😎

The sound of Cleevy Nicks’ voice just makes me want to scream. Her voice is beyond annoying. It is up there with Tiny Tim and the sound of mating cats screaming under the window when you want to sleep. It is nails on a chalk board. It is the sound of demons in Hell. It is the sound of skin on gravel all churned up and gargled with broken glass. Then the whole twirling witch woman personal just turns my stomach. Hey, I’m all for Halloween shit and witches, vampires, and black dresses, but NOOOOOOOOO Nicks. Oh fuck me if I ever have to hear her voice again. Other than that it is a fun song.

LOL! I think this is the first time I have ever heard anyone not liking Stevie Nicks…. which always amused me since I didn’t think she was “all that.” My Dad always differed… but he had a crush.
