Our quest to craft the perfect virtual squirrel calendar continues each and every Thursday until we run out of months. The Nest is having its readers (the BEST readers in the whole wide blogosphere, of course!) vote on some of my favorite squirrel pics I’ve taken during each month to see who will be the eye candy for that particular month on the calendar. Yes, YOU decide! Not me. Not your weird neighbors. Not Simon Cowell. My readers are the ultimate judge!
And 20 of you all did your civic sciurine duty last week to choose our August squirrel! Let’s see who gets to sweat it out next summer…
There have been quite a few winners that have surprised me during this experiment so far….. but honestly, I’d have given up all hope that I see squirrels the way my readers do had Batsquirrel not taken the title for August! That is my favorite squirrel moment I have ever photographed, and now he will be there looking at you upside down as you X off each day next August!
And now onto September! This may be a squirrel’s busiest month of the year as nuts and other good stuff are falling off the trees everywhere and just waiting to get buried in the ground by cute little paws! Let’s see who you’ll have to peruse over for the unofficial first month of Fall. The nominees for September in chronological order….
#1. Charging Squirrel (September 30, 2014)
#2. Messy Eater (September 16, 2015)
#3. Short Branch (September 23, 2015)
#4. In The Crook Of A Tree (September 23, 2015)
#5. Swishy Tail (September 8, 2016)
#6. Surprise! (September 5, 2019)
What a cavalcade of cuteness! Which one of these adorable little critters should get the nod for our September calendar squirrel? Vote in the poll below NOW!
Make sure you have your vote registered before next Wednesday night the 23rd! Otherwise, you won’t earn the right to bitch about the results. And that’s just the American way, man…
Gosh this was a toughie…….I liked ALL of them…..for different reasons. But I voted – I’ve done my civic squirrel duty for the day!

This was a lot harder month than I thought it was going to be to round up a list of candidates. I probably would have included “Ostrich Squirrel” from my lead photo normally, but photos without a head shot don’t seem to be getting any love. The few I did find mostly have GREAT headshots! It is a tough choice, but I would have probably picked the same one you did!
Charging squirrel is a great pic, but maybe a bit aggressive for a calendar boy. I went with short branch.
That is the only picture I’ve ever taken of a squirrel running TOWARDS me! Gotta love his spunkiness if nothing else. I think you made a wise choice in Short Branch, though…
Short branch squirrel has that model quality one likes to see in one’s squirrel calendar. I’m just saying. A star is born
Short Branch has long been a go-to picture for me when I need a dose of squirrel cuteness in a post. He has the face that would light up an entire month…
Too many good choices! I voted for the swishy tail. I liked the motion. They’re just all too cute.
This was a great month for squirrel faces, and that tail motion won me over as soon as I noticed how well the camera picked it up. Most squirrels run and hide from me, but this one stayed and let me know I was disturbing his groove, and I couldn’t have been happier!
I’m going to go with #4, Crook in the Tree Squirrel, it looks so cute just sitting there wondering what’s going on. All calm and stuff, but this one was a tough one because they are all so adorable.
There was a lot of great squirrel face in this batch!
Number 3, it is a real portrait is a squirrel. And yes, they all are very cute. Vote for me, please.
That one seems to be the favorite so far, which I expected…
All little squirrels are so cute. I kept scrolling back and forth… so hard to pick just one, but short branch won. 🙂
It’s a buffet of squirrel cuteness, and it seems to wrong to only have to choose one!
Oh boy, they’re all so cute! But I had to pick one and I see I went with the current majority.
I think the current majority stands a very good chance of winning…
I liked Swishy Tail & Short Branch best. They were all good.
I’m going to go with Short Branch.
Good choice.
That “Chargin’ Squirrel’ just spoke to me (yeah it was a high pitched chittering sound. I think he was telling me to f*ck off). Was that one just really territorial or rabid? 😐 That squirrel, honestly would be THE pick for October’s ‘page’, but well we’re only up to September. Cest la vie
It was, thankfully, a ways away from me… my zoom just makes him look like he’s headed for my ankles. Even at a distance, I’ve never had a squirrel run straight in my direction, and captured it, other than him…
Short Branch!!
Yup, short branch is the winner, hands…er…tails down. 🐿
I’m sure you’ll be glad to know that the scrawny squirrels from September have rounded out nicely. They look VERY healthy! And if you’re missing a cover squirrel, I’ve got a few spare photographs!
I couldn’t even begin to count how many squirrel photos I’ve saved up over the years. I could make hundreds of unique calendars. I added 42 more to the archive just a few days ago (including the “backrubs” picture)…
They’re all so good! I think number 4, but I’d be fine with Short Branch too!
I went with #3 short branch because I love the way he’s looking at the camera with such intensity. But I feel guilty for not picking each and every other squirrel. Sorry, little friends. You’re all calendar squirrels in my book!
