Beware those spooky October squirrels…
The Nest is creating a virtual squirrel calendar and opening up the archive to find the perfect models for each month. My patient (very, very patient) readers are getting to decide for themselves which squirrels should be immortalized within this yearlong tribute to cuteness, and which ones should merely be awarded participation trophies. The candidates are getting better and better as we enter the heart of Autumn, the squirrel’s golden season!
Last week’s September squirrels were a particularly hard lot for you all to pick just one from! But there was still one squirrel who rose above the rest….
Short Branch was just so awesomely handsome, he clearly captured the majority of the squirrel loving public’s hearts! I think there are still some people not seeing the poll, because I know #4 got some love in the comments, yet showed up empty in the official results. That was neither here nor there, though, Short Branch is our squirrel who will see you in September…

And now we move on to the festive month of October! My archive is nowhere near as big as I suspected it would be for a prime Fall month… even none of the great photos I took just last week at the park and haven’t even shared yet on my blog made the cut. But I found a nice slate from the middle of the decade that I think you’ll love. Here are the candidates for the October calendar squirrel in chronological order…

It was very convenient that I took that picture in October, and I bumped it ahead of another photo from that same batch that I like better and which has the same silhouetted effect just because of the Halloween theme.

Cheering squirrel is another favorite I like to reuse for a funny caption because he looks so darned enthusiastic!

Gosh Evil, how can anyone choose just one Cutie Squirrel?! Your not making this easy but I’m going to have to go with Vampire Squirrel because of Halloween of course. But they are all so cute!
This poll seems to have no real favorite… or at least, no one is running away with it yet. I can’t help it so many of the squirrels I take pictures of happen to be cute!
Once again you make the choice almost impossible. I voted for Vampire Squirrel (of course.) Nice squirrel art photo and so fitting for October.
The shadows are what really makes that picture. That was made possible by the fact that I took it after the sun came up in the morning, but before it was high enough to shine in the tree…
This is now difficult, so many suitable for October. Number 3 is my favorite, there is something really great in it, dark trees on both sides, light background and the best is the head. Please, bite for me again.

However, these are some great squirrel pics. I like Cheering, but I can see the whole squirrel clearer in Resting. So, I’ll go with Resting. This is going to be a fantastic calendar!

Three was funny but I reckon Cheering Squirrel is the most “Autumny”.
They’ve all got shades of Autumn in them (which they should, all being taken in October and all)… but the happy cheering squirrel would look good in any season. He’d be just as tickled if he were standing in a foot of snow…
Cheering squirrel was a good choice but I loved Sunlit Leaves and Taking a Rest squirrels too. They’ve all so cute! And Squirrelcoon – what an oddball he is. In addition to that crazy tail, he looks like he’s wearing an orange toupee as well. You have the most unusual squirrels there!
I’ll probably never see a squirrel as weird looking as Squirrelcoon again! Then again, just this year I saw my first blonde squirrel and squirrel with one ear, so I guess I should never say never!
