Trick And Treat

Good squirrel, bad squirrel.

It just wouldn’t be Halloween on The Nest without a brand new, freshly carved Squirrel O’Lantern!  This year, the good pumpkins sold out way faster than expected, and by early last week when I normally buy my pumpkin each year, they were already long gone with no more coming in!  I had to settle for smaller pumpkins, which ruled out any elaborate carving designs… and I got the idea for this as I was sifting through the bin of midget pumpkins and bought two of them.  Meet Trick and Treat, the 2019 squirrel o’lanterns!  I plan on putting one on either side of the door tonight, and we’ll see if the normally few kids that trek through will be willing to brave wind chills in the 20’s for a chance to ooh and aah over my gourd carvery.  Oh, and I guess some candy too….

If you’d like to see all of my past squirrel o’lanterns, you can find them right here!

  1. Those are awesome, even if you say they are smaller pumpkins! And just for the record, there is no such thing as bad squirrels, lol.

  2. Oh I think they turned out SPOOKILY SPECTACULAR. We’re expecting weird and wild weather (possible 50mph winds OR tornados) so not sure we’ll see any kids….which means of course WE will eat the candy!

Oh my goodness. These are absolutely wonderful!

  9. Those are wonderful! 🙂

I prefer the treat squirrel though. Unless the treats are acorns. I’m not really fond of oak nuts. 😉

  10. Hmm…and here Elsa and I thought all squirrels were bad. 🎃Nice craving job!

  11. Those pumpkins are great, you are a pumpkin artist!!!

  12. You do really remarkable carving! I’m kind of mediocre, but yours are spectacular.

    • Apparently I have some innate talent for this, since other than the occasional traditional jack o lantern I’d make when I was a kid, this is only the tenth squirrel-themed carving I’ve done. I’m still amazed by the people who can carve a celebrity face in a pumpkin… even if I could do that, I’m sure I wouldn’t have the patience for something that intricate….

I love them! I’m amazed you can make one squirrel look naughty and the other friendly and nice with just a knife and a pumpkin. You really have a talent for pumpkin carving!

    • It’s amazing how much a tiny little cut can change how the entire thing looks! I’d have never been able to do this had I not discovered we sell those kits with the smaller little carving saws in them… you can’t do these with a kitchen knife!

Very cool! I don’y know how you manage that. I’d end up with a big blob of nothing if I tried.

    • I kinda just figured it out along the way… and of course, got a kit with some smaller saws. It will really cramp your hands to do some of the finer details (Not to mention hold pieces in place so you don’t accidentally cut them out!)
