Lucky You

I got news for you…. rabbit’s feet are NOT LUCKY!!!

It’s time to flush the year 2019 down the toilet…. oh wait, I can’t do that right now.  Eh, I guess I’ll just have to help kiss this past year goodbye the same way I hope you all will…. with the next song in our countdown of some of my eardrum’s favorite songs of all time.  It’s the Top 30 Songs We Just Feel Like Playing countdown!  So far, there has only been one entry from the Third Millennium in this countdown… though that will change as we reach the upper tier of this musical shrine.  Here’s another song that was recorded in a year that started with 2, though it sounds an awful lot like it was really recorded forty years earlier…

#18. “Get Lucky” – Daft Punk, featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers

2013 was a key year in music for me, as it was the year the short-lived Mecca muzak CD was in use at work, introducing me to many, many recent indie pop songs I adored so much, I started posting music on Mondays here to show them off!  But it was also a banner year for pop music on the radio… a trend which reached a fever pitch in 2014.  Almost all of my favorite songs of the 2010’s come from that two year stretch.  And one of those songs was by a band that had been around for two decades, but who very few people had even heard of at the time…

These guys… well, I think it’s those guys anyway.

Daft Punk was well known in clubs across the world for their electronica dance mixes… but hadn’t had a whole lot of success on this side of the bouncer’s rope.  In 2013, they released their landmark album Random Access Memories… which spawned a whole slew of minor hits for the band who named themselves after a critic’s description of their music.

Oh, and that album led off with the song Daft Punk will always be known for….

Who says disco is dead?  In 2013, over thirty years after the last time anyone wore a leisure suit unironically… Daft Punk, with a lot of help from former Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers, put together one of the greatest disco songs ever (Not THE best… one appears much higher in this countdown).  They also tabbed up and coming superstar Pharrell Williams to sing the lead… who oddly enough was the very person who kept Daft Punk from getting lucky, since “Get Lucky” only made #2 on the US Hot 100.  Keeping it out of that top spot was the other hit song Pharrell contributed to that was being played on the radio all the time in the Summer of 2013…

Here’s a hint to that song’s identity…

And if you’re one of the very vocal minority of people who seem to despise Robin Thicke’s #1 song “Blurred Lines”…. well, I went easy on you, since I could have just as easily put that song in this countdown as well.  I love it.  And without it, we wouldn’t have Weird Al’s excellent “Word Crimes” parody…

You the hottest bitch in this place!

More excellent Countdown of Whatever songs will come your way on Mondays in 2020!

  1. Disco won’t ever die for me – I still think it’s the best “in my car driving around” music and if not for the songs and that beat, my two hour drive to visit my sister in W. Virginia would not be as much fun as I find it to be. I liked “Get Lucky” back then and still do…….AND Pharrell with “that other song” !

p.s. May the OLD year be flushed away thanks to your plumber and the new year flushed IN – soon!

  2. I use that tune to help with the monotony of painting the living room walls. Gets me through with nary a problem and clean up is a breeze. Here’s to many more groovy tunes in 2020! 🎊

That rarest of the rare items..a disco-y song that I not only liked, but loved!

  4. Yes this IS the way to start off the week. Thanks for getting my dancing feet happy.

That’s exactly the same way my oldest son gauges the passage of time- flushed down the toilet. So eloquent… and yet not particularly inaccurate either. 😜

    Cheers to a terrific 2020!

  6. Flush it! Flush it! Flush it!! That’s all I have to say, lol.

  7. One of the my highest scoring posts last year was a lament to the loss of the leisure suit. Everyone had one, even classy Garry. He said it was so much more comfortable than most of his suits. Personally, living as I do these days entirely in things with elastic waists? I don’t think i could go back to clothing that really FITS. Are you getting a toilet very soon? This is a long time toilet-free.

Yep, very disco. Like it fell through a time warp or got stuck in a DeLorean or something…
