Well, that was some game, wasn’t it? At least, I’m assuming it was since I’m actually writing this post on Saturday morning. Still hungover from the big party for an overbloated event? The Nest is here with some hair for your dog in the form of the next great hit in our Top 30 Songs We Just Feel Like Playing countdown! If you didn’t already have a headache from too much brewski and nachos….. well, you should by the time this post is over….
#13. “Sober” – Tool
The post-Nirvana alternative mess that music devolved into during the early 1990’s is generally not one of my favorite eras to listen to songs from. However, my taste is so scattershot and at times undefinable, that even my least favorite genres of music are bound to spit out a tune or two that I end up really, really liking. And that takes us to an alternative metal band named Tool… whose name means pretty much what you’re afraid it might mean. Their 1993 debut single is perhaps (I really don’t know much about them other than this song) their best known song… and one that I had to wedge into this countdown somewhere.
Enjoy the creepy little video that goes along with their song “Sober”…
Those of you who watched the MTV cartoon “Beavis & Butthead” back in its heyday might remember seeing this video get critiqued by the two dumbasses. That’s where I first learned of its existence… though the song took a long, long time to grow on me. And it took even longer… damned near 25 years in fact, for it to become one of my very favorite songs. There’s just something about this song that I really enjoy, and it’s a shame this genre of music eventually devolved into that death metal mess that is all nonstop drums, power chords, and singers who all shout the lyrics just like Cookie Monster…
Stay sober, and I’ll treat you to Song #12 next Monday, from a group that helped define the 80’s…
me toooooo!!! saw it while watching beavis and butthead… who says that MTV is not educational? it’s a nice song when you at the end of your smoke… LOL
I learned a lot from watching Beavis and Butthead. Their way with, huh huh huh, words still influences the way I talk today.
Oh that definitely WAS a creepy little video but really interesting and I loved it – AND the music was not “ear-assaulting” like a lot of heavy metal stuff I can remember. It was GOOD. Never heard of “Tool” but then I didn’t like that genre then but I do like this one. Good stuff………
Pam
It’s pretty tame compared to a lot of the stuff from this genre that’s come after. Who knows, maybe it will even be designated as MUZAK one of these days!
I don’t remember ever hearing the song, but I’ve heard of Tool. I really like the music, but couldn’t really hear the lyrics very good. The video was strange & yes, creepy. 🙂
I noticed the band was still around, and largely the same after all these years… though this is still the only song I know them for. I pushed another 90’s song I really like out of the countdown to squeeze it in here, so I really love it!
This is one of the grunge era songs that I still really like! I’d forgotten how creepy the video is. While watching it, I wished I could remember what Beavis and Butthead had to say about it, but it’s just been too long.
I remember Beavis going crazy when the little guy lifted the cover off the pipe and all that…. stuff could be seen going through it. “Turds!!!”
LOL! That sounds like Beavis!
A group that helped define the 80’s? Ooh, ooh, could it be The Bangles? Heh.
I guess it could be….
Oh, I love Maynard James Keenan–that video is SO crazy! Do you still have Sears stores where you are? Ours all shut down!
