Whether you’re cooped up at home right now, or valiantly working to keep humanity from devolving into complete chaos… The Nest has another super song from its own personal favorites list ready to fire you up and make you forget about other things for a few minutes! It’s time for the next song in our Top 30 Songs We Just Feel Like Playing countdown. We’re all the way up to #6, and if this one doesn’t get your blood pumping, you’ve probably been in quarantine just a bit too long…
#6. “Invincible” – Pat Benatar
I have a somewhat annual tradition in my Monday Muzak feature where I recognize one of the inductees from the newest class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame prior to its ceremony each Spring. Even with the countdown pre-empting that time, I thought I might have lucked into pulling that off again this year since Pat Benatar was among this year’s deserving nominees… especially since she did so well in the fan voting. But despite a reputation for being overly progressive when it comes to selecting new members, the powers that be over the R&RHoF snubbed Benatar… one of the first and most successful female artists to break through the black leather ceiling of hard rock.
Benatar’s biggest and best known hit will always be “Love Is A Battlefield,” and she has the claim to fame of having the second music video to ever air on MTV in “You Better Run.” But my absolute favorite song from Pat, and one that always gets me fired up, is her 1985 #10 hit “Invincible,” which was also the theme song to the mostly forgotten Helen Slater movie The Legend of Billie Jean…
While Benatar performed as a solo artist, she had a regular lineup in her backing band that added the rock sound to her voice… including her longtime husband, guitarist Neil Giraldo. Those guys really shine in this song as well, and get to show it off during the intermezzo… putting it right up there with Saga’s “Turn Me Loose” among my favorite instrumental breaks in any song.
My Top Five begins next week! Five songs I really, really love…. and I hope you will too! See you next Monday…
Always really liked her music………….this truly does rock big time. Too bad she keeps getting passed on the road to Hall of Fame.
Pam
As always, it’s the judges who have no talent…
Awesome. She is still awesome. Thanks ES.
Yes she is!
She has to be one of the Greatest Women In Rock!!! HANDS DOWN!! Thanks for the great Monday, work from home music Evil!
No problem! It must be agonizing not getting to listen to the ambient sounds of you-know who…
AWESOME song! Took me right back to those 80s days…. *sigh* when things were still limber and I could actually dance if I chose to. These days? I’m the old broad doing ‘chair dancing’ because trying to get my knees to bend properly is a futile effort. I’ll look forward to next week’s selection!
Leg warmers look just as good for chair dancing as regular dancing…. just saying!
Pat B. can rock with anyone…whether or not the Hall recognizes it. Great tune!
Yes. They should change the name to something else, because I don’t think the HoF actually caters to rock and roll anymore…
Boy, you nailed it on that thought! 🎵
What a shame that she was snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She did rock!
BTW, I think your warped imagination has influenced my already wacky subconscious mind. Last night I dreamed I was in a beautiful forest and there were all these adorable, fluffy squirrels and bunnies hopping around…and then this deranged-looking squirrel that looked and acted an awful lot like Scrat showed up and started humping one of the cute little bunnies. My dreaming mind comes up with some crazy shit but never anything like Scrat!
LOL!!!! I am very sorry if I triggered that creepy dream! Now I might have to add a disclaimer to SCT that it may cause deranged nightmares…
I’m afraid it was more of a nightmare for that poor bunny!
Pat Benatar is too cool for that stupid Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Just saying…
They need a Too Cool Hall of Fame so the awesome people can be recognized. It could have a cool table and everything…
An eminently passable song!
Eminently passable…. now there’s high praise indeed!
