You Gotta Believe!

Mitzi believes in bimbocorns. Do you?

Pass the grass, and don’t bogart the muzak.  It’s 4/20, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as The Nest is ready to light up the next song in its Top 30 Songs We Just Feel Like Playing countdown.  And today we have the penultimate song in this series… and yes, I love dropping that word on the second to last of anything.  My #2 song won’t be playing second fiddle to anything…. well, other than next week’s #1, I guess.  Even those of you in a mellow mood will want to crank this one up…

#2. “Believer” – Imagine Dragons

One of the hardest things I had to do while constructing this countdown of my favorite songs that I’d never used (and couldn’t later feature) in my Monday Muzak series was somehow limiting the number of songs I used from the 2010’s… in particular, the range from about 2012-2014.  I had to scratch off so many modern songs I really, really wanted to use to foster variety, and keep the countdown from being too 21st Century-centric.  It hurt to cut One Republic’s “When the Love Runs Out,” I had to really bottle up my pride to spare you from Robin Thicke’s infamous “Blurred Lines,” and you can thank your lucky stars I forgot all about Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off,” which is an awesome fucking song (CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!) and I don’t care who knows about that!

How could you do that to me!?!? Why do boys hate me so much!?!?!?

Among many other songs from the 10’s I had to 86 from the countdown, there was Imagine Dragons‘ 2014 hit “Demons,” which was my favorite song by the band that broke out in this musical era sweet spot of mine.  That snub came about in a most unusual way, though…. only happening because the Las Vegas band came out three years later with an ever better song.  A song I love so much, that it was a very easy choice for the runner up spot in my countdown.  Listen to this, and see if it doesn’t make you a “Believer”…

Mecca Radio first introduced me to this song in 2017, and once my radio station picked it up, it because a must-crank every time it got played while I was driving.  The first time I did this while my Mom was in the car with me, she almost immediately asked, “Is that Imagine Dragons?”  Yeah, my mother is somewhat hip to the new stuff.  She could tell by the prominent percussion featured throughout “Believer,” and which is a staple of most of the Dragons’ hits…

4:20 Dragon is a believer.

Twenty-nine songs down……. one to go!  Which song did I pick to top off the Countdown of Whatever?  There’s only one way to find out.  See you in 168 hours…

  1. I bet the last one is definitely NOT from the biber kid … this is the DJ for good muzak, yeah!

  2. I really did/do love this one. Don’t hear it on the radio EVER these days though – must be the station I’m listening to – Oh Ooh…better do something about that! Anxious to hear your #1 next week…….Oh Ooh yeah.

    Pam

    • It appears to be on my station’s main playlist (Along with “Thunder,” which is OK, but not even in “Believer’s” league), and I get to hear it occasionally at work. Now my #1 song, I don’t get to hear much anymore…. what could it possibly be!?!?!?

  3. Good choice.
So many bands come out of Las Vegas.
I’m enjoying the variety of your choices and looking forward to #1.

    • I thought it was odd when I researched them to find out they came out of Vegas, since unlike Boston or Seattle or Detroit or the like, you never hear of musicians coming from Vegas. Which is kind of counter intuitive given what an entertainment mecca it is…

I look forward to the reactions to my number one….

      • Panic! at the Disco, The Killers, Five Finger Death Punch, Falling in Reverse, and Slaughter are all from Las Vegas with LDS background. Neon Trees are from Provo Utah. The Osmond family aren’t the only ones with the LDS background. Quote from Mother Jones: The band has performed benefits for Amnesty International, the UN Refugee Agency, and LGBTQ organizations—not quite a CPAC-ish line-up. Moreover, the lead singer, Dan Reynolds, who was raised Mormon in Utah, is featured in a new documentary, Believer, which tracks his journey from Mormon missionary to fierce advocate for LGBTQ causes who has challenged the Mormon Church’s stance on gay rights. The film got a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
My closest friend lives in Las Vegas. Half of my other friends are from strong old LDS backgrounds so I learn this stuff. And THIS is why I always win Trivial Pursuits.

I can’t wait to see your #1. Stand by it and OWN IT.

  4. Wait…you cut a One Republic song?? Sacriligious!! Oh well, at least Imagine Dragons were spared.

    • If I would have made this countdown five years ago, it would have been my highest rated 21st century song. “When the Love Runs Out” got played a lot around here when it first came out, then got kicked to the curb and now all I ever hear from them is “Counting Stars” which is a very meh song for me…

I like this song too and especially after reading the lyrics. I always thought they were saying…”break me off a piece of that Kit Kat, Kit Kat…”

  6. draliman says:

Very cool song! I’ve never heard of them, maybe I’ll need to investigate. Since you show-cased Elle King the other week, I listen to her albums daily while home-workng now I’m not allowed outside.

    • I found it odd that Imagine Dragons seemed to be big everywhere except the UK. They’re a really great group… and if you like this one, you’d probably like a lot of their other songs as well.

    • I thought I had replied to this yesterday, but I remember now getting distracted mid-comment and apparently never came back to it!

If you liked this song, I think you’ll like a lot of their other stuff too. They’re really one of the better acts to come around this past decade…

      • draliman says:

Looks like you did reply to it “yesterday”. Two replies to one comment! I have reached the pinnacle! The first one didn’t show up on my dashboard though, so something odd happened…

      • That’s weird! I swear it wasn’t there yesterday! The WordPress helper monkeys are at it again…

  7. Trisha says:

Your mom is way more hip than me. If someone had ever asked me what Imagine Dragons was I would have guessed a kid’s TV show!

    • Both of my parents listened to the same station I did that played both old and new music! Dad was a huge fan of Adele, who I can’t stand! Mom’s also watched American Idol since almost the beginning, so she knows a lot of the newer stuff from there…

  8. ghostmmnc says:

I like that song a whole lot – and I’d never heard it before. I don’t really know much about the band.

    • They’ve got some really good songs besides this one that I think you’d also like. I highly recommend Demons and Radioactive, as well as Believer’s sister song Thunder…

  9. randomlyerin says:

OMG, I love this band and I love this song!!!

  10. Quirky Girl says:

Hey, as long as Mitzi still believes in, well, something… the world will continue to go round 😛
