Stuck in a funk that even a Parliament song can’t get you out of? Well, it’s Monday! No, don’t get all discouraged! Really, that’s a good thing! You see, Monday is the day The Nest digs deep inside music’s psyche for another fondly repressed memory from that giant vat of grey matter we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive! DJ Scratchy’s got her superego in high gear, while the Sponkies read up on all the depressing side effects of Prozac. It’s time for a little musical therapy…
June is the cruelest month. OK, that’s not how it goes… but that’s how it’s been for me so far. So when Mecca played this song Saturday night while I was at work, I knew I had my DVA earworm for the week…
The Milwaukee band Citizen King was a one hit wonder at a time when it was difficult for relatively obscure artists to crack the Billboard charts… let alone get any kind of radio airplay. But their 1999 masterpiece “Better Days (And The Bottom Drops Out)” was one of many great songs that was popular in the final year of the 1900’s… the first year I was listening to new music since the 80’s. And they’re in great company among 1999’s outstanding OHW class with Eagle Eye Cherry, Tal Bachman, Len, and of course Lou Bega…
Citizen King’s sound was a mashup of hip hop and 90’s rock, much like another 90’s OHW group Urban Dance Squad. It’s got a standard, but non-annoying hip hop beat that will help you think of better days if you think the bottom’s dropped out. The humor in both the song and the video should cheer you up as well…
OK, our hour is up. Your next session with our musical shrink Dr. Scratchy will be next Monday…
you described it perfectly… a memory of better days, YESSS!
Even the 90’s were better days…
I love my one hit wonders. well done
Some of them are more talented than 20 hit wonders…
Oh boy is that an appropriate song or what? I also liked it when it came out…..and still do. Here’s to BETTER DAYS……….and Ody back in the Nest Computer Room? That’s a sure sign that things are looking up – just make sure he has plenty of antibiotics for any close encounters with Mitzi!
Pam
Mitzi definitely has worse things than fleas. The lab hasn’t quite figured out what she has yet, they keep inviting her back in for “testing”…
Yeah – sure – I’ve heard that “we need to do another test” stuff……but is it necessary to put you OUT during a test? I mean who knows what goes on when you’re OUT! I’m sure Mitzi doesn’t care!!!
I never heard this before, but I really like it! The video is cute and has the aliens and MIB, too. 🙂
I noticed that too! It was right after the movie came out…
Fun video. I’ve never heard this song before. Something new every day.
Unlike the radio, we actually want to play songs you may not have heard before. What a concept!
Ah yes, I remember this one quite fondly. I actually have it stuck in my head now without even watching the video. So thanks for that. 🙂
Earworms are a side effect of reading this blog…
Well, the video was quite fun…
That’s the way to keep it positive!
This song gets played often on a local station which I don’t mind. Especially good for a road trip.
