That is unusual. Can’t say I’ve ever seen one before…
Like your “deer flamingo,” it was just a lucky timed shot where he had it straight out like that. I’d assume he was probably wagging it back and forth at the time…
That is truly impressive! Usually there’s a curly tip or at least a “question mark” in those tails but this guy is at attention……….full on.

That looks so weird! Are you sure the squirrels in your area don’t have freakishly long tails?

I wish I knew what he was doing when I took that picture. My assumption is that he was waving it back and forth, and I just happened to catch the moment it was completely straight… but there’s no motion blur at all.
I posted an update on Ody, and he is doing well!
I’ve never seen one with a straight up tail, but lately I’ve seen a few with ratlike tails — which I gather are probably the result of fighting with other squirrels. We have one wounded guy who manages to get a meal at our feeder. I think he’d have died otherwise. I’m rooting for him.
All squirrels have ratlike tails, but the rattiness usually shows better in the summer when their tail fur isn’t as thick. If it’s been hot and dry up there, you probably have a lot of rat tailed squirrels lurking about…
I didn’t realise the tail was so long!
