Lighter Than Air

95% fluff, 5% nuts.

There are so many amazing attributes that make the common squirrel a very uncommon critter.  One thing many people may not notice about squirrels is how they can balance themselves on the most delicate of branches without so much as breaking a twig.

Check out the branch this squirrel is perched on as he enjoys a snack.  You can see it isn’t very thick, and is itself connected to another branch that you’d be hesitant to even hang a birdfeeder from.  How does he do it?  Of all the laws of physics squirrels seem to defy, their ability to minimize the amount of downward force they exert on very fragile objects has to be among the most inconceivable.  Unless that squirrel is full of hot air, I don’t see how he shouldn’t be snapping that flimsy twig he’s sitting on…

Full of hot air!?!? Come up here and say that to my face!

No thanks, buddy.  I haven’t learned the weightless trick that has helped make you this week’s Saturday Squirrel…

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. I agree they are amazing athletes – they also seem to just “know” what a safe branch is as they run from limb to limb on a tree or through the woods….we have woods all around us and they learn the “networks” up through the trees that are safe I think. We love to watch them (so does Teddy!).

    • I’m always amazed when I go to the park and one climbs way up in a tree to get away from my evil camera… and I’m sure it has nowhere to go. Yet, it’ll leap out to the flimsiest branch on a neighboring tree and get away from the paparazzi! I’m pretty sure the sidewalk cracks under my feet, yet they can leap full force onto a twig and not fall!

Oh, to be as nimble as a squirrel.

I love watching them leap to grab the thinnest branch imaginable then climb up or down safely!

The squirrels have discovered our bird feeder at our new place. They clean up all the spilled seed, so good on them!

Full of hot air is right.

  6. They are amazing little acrobats!

Ah, to have the balance and athleticism of a squirrel…

  8. Nimbleness goes paw in paw with their craftiness. 🐿

It is amazing how they can walk and sit on such thin branches. Even the super chunky squirrels that resemble Hung-Lo in shape are held up by scrawny twigs!
