Time Passages

a box full of junk

Randomly appearing on a Wednesday near you, it’s another exciting edition of The Nest’s convoluted creative exercise we call Random Image Inspiration!  The Randomator is going to choose some numbers, and then we’re going to use the not so secret formula to find something off Google to inspire us.  Or maybe perspire us…

4, 11, 36, 34

The 4th post in my Reader was this one by Lynette

The 11th word in that post is “source”

The 36th word in that post is “from”

Putting “source from” into Google Images brought up….. well, a lot of charts and diagrams showing how to use certain computer programs, which included the 34th result.  So I skipped to the first actual image after that, which was the 39th result….

Tim held up the flat device next to his trusty laptop he’d brought with him and could not believe that this alien machine was able to display the same internet sites he could get on his computer.

“This is incredible!” Tim said as he continued to surf the device.  “You said this is called a “smart phone?”

“Yes,” Tim’s future self replied, “and you don’t have to scratch at the surface to scroll it.  Just swipe your fingers over the top of the screen.”

“We knew that wireless internet technology was possible on cellphones in 2006,” Tim said, “but to see it in this form is just amazing!  Tell me more about this social media that’s been all the rage…”

“Well,” Future Tim replied, “you have Facebook, which allows you to post every intricate detail about your life…”

“Is that anything like MySpace?”

“My what?  Oh, I’d forgotten all about them.  How quaint.  It seems like we’ve had Instagram and Twitter forever…”

“What did you just call me?”

“Twit…. oh, nevermind.”

“It’s amazing how much technology has advanced in just fifteen years!” Tim rejoiced.  He leered over his shoulder at the time machine he’d spent twenty years of his life building.  The magical vehicle that had temporarily brought him to this seemingly not-so-distant year of 2021.  He knew its power source, still located in 2006, was draining fast, and he only had a few precious minutes to return to it before it reversed course and returned to what he knew as the present.  And given the marvels that the 2020’s had to offer, he was wondering if he wanted to return at all…

He scrolled through the brainy phone some more.  Something he came across made him laugh out loud…

“Hey, future self!  This says Donald Trump was actually elected President!  Surely this is some pathetic attempt at humor…”

“Yeah, of course, that would have never happened….” Future Tim replied from behind him.  “Just keep reading through that wonderful new toy of yours… who knows what you’ll find!”

“2021 is so awesome!” Tim said with a huge smile.  “I can’t wait to get out and see what else in this future world has changed in fifteen years!”

Tim scrolled to a news site and his eyes went wide……

“Huh?  Hey future self!  What’s this on the news about….. WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Tim had turned around just in time to see the 2021 version of himself happily wave goodbye to his 2006 iteration from the comfort of the time machine.  Before Tim could even react, the capsule disappeared in a huge puff of smoke, sending the future version of Tim back to 2006, while the present version of Tim was now stuck in 2021 with all that wonderful amazing technology!

And…… well……….. you know…….

On the bright side, Tim will have plenty of time to stay inside and work on a new time machine!

  1. Yes Tim will have time to work on a new time machine and hopefully he will get one made and get the heck out of 2021 ASAP……there are a lot of us who wouldn’t mind joining him on that journey! HAHA

    • Maybe your past self will pay you a visit to give you that chance…. no wait, you’d remember if your past self traveled to the future, right? The time space continuum is so complicated…

    looking forward to 2022! )

  3. Kismet says:

It would be better to stay in 2006 than to be in 2020 or 2021.

  4. 2021. Only exceeded by 2020.

  5. Staying inside seems so benign these days. Oh well, too hot (and too germy) anyway to be out and about anyway. Ironic your post, I was just recalling when my old boss demonstrated FaceTime on his new iphone and how impressed we were. Little did we know then. 😈

Well, this sounds like a universe-destroying temporal paradox just waiting to happen…

    • My original idea for the story was to have the future Tim vanish as soon as past Tim missed his ride back to 2006, but then the idea of having future Tim get the hell out of 2021 was too tempting. Of course, he still should have disappeared before he reached his destination. Not so clever, future Tim…
