The Finger

I wouldn’t want to be poked in the eye with that…

I’ve got lots of photos of squirrels climbing up the sides of trees that look a lot like today’s entry… but this one shows off one of the squirrel’s more unique features that often goes unappreciated.  In order to cling to the bark of trees well enough to be able to traverse them as easily as we would the ground, squirrels obviously have some pretty sharp claws.  They also have some freakishly long fingers and toes (compared to the rest of their body) that aid in their tree scaling task.  I captured this squirrel with one of his digits fully exposed from base to claw tip, which gives a rare good look at this useful bit of sciurine anatomy…

A big thanks to this week’s Saturday Squirrel for giving us all the finger!

Have a great weekend everyone!

    Now that’s what I call a finger!

  2. Thank you, never seen his finger like that. Is it a middle finger?

I’m a bird expert. Those fingers come in handy when flipping the bird at someone.

Yikes. I shall refer to our squirrel friends as “Mr Squirrel, Sir” from now on.

  7. Looks like someone needs to manicure, big time!
