During a relatively warm week in early January, I made a trip to the park that wound up being a lot shorter than I had hoped… not just because the batteries in my camera were junk and went out in just a half an hour, but because despite the milder than normal conditions, the squirrels just weren’t out and about. Except for one place…..
The park dumpster!
While they’re not as well known for invading our garbage as their nocturnal critter brethren, squirrels aren’t above sifting through our waste receptacles. Not everything squirrels like grows on trees… sometimes we throw it away for them to find.
You may think that these furry little dumpster divers are sullying the sterling reputation of Saturday Squirrels on my blog, but that’s just rubbish!
Have a great weekend everyone!
That’s funny, I never thought of squirrels as garbage pickers.
They’re curious enough to get into anything. I’ve seen them in the cans at the park numerous times…
The squirrels in my urban neighborhood must be total gangsters-they absolutely love trash bins-they’ve even been caught chewing the lids to trash bins that were substituted for dumpsters a few years ago to help themselves to dried cheese on pizza containers and other morsels. My trash bin has multiple holes in the lid-I think my resident hoodlum must think it’s a compost bin for his pleasure.
I haven’t noticed that problem here. Perhaps your squirrels have an extra bad case of the munchies for (cough) some reason….
Squirrels don’t see dumpsters……they see an all you can eat/scounge/sniff out buffet!
Pam
I guess the all you can eat buffet of nuts on the ground isn’t good enough for them! So much for squirrels eating healthy…
I hope he finds some treasures. We once found a grandfather clock in a dumpster!
I’m not sure a grandfather clock would fit in a squirrel’s nest. They would likely need someone to operate the freight elevator to get it up there, though….
Awwww. They look adorable even while dumpster diving!
They sure do! I’m not so sure they still SMELL adorable, though….
It would be a lucky squirrel who finds some chileh in there…
Eating someone else’s garbage?? No self respect.
