A Night At The Roxette

Come on, join the joyride!

It’s Monday again!  And since I didn’t take the time to write this up during my days off, I’m not bothering with a clever intro or much detail today.  So here’s another lost hit from the Dusty Vinyl Archive that DJ Scratchy and the Sponkies think you’ll all love!  Except, of course, for Draliman….

While trying to brainstorm a DVA pick that I likely wouldn’t have much to say about, I had a tune start going through my head for absolutely no reason at all… and it was apparently my subconscious trying to be the boss of me…

The Swedish duo Roxette, consisting of Per Gessle and the lovely Marie Fredriksson, were huge pop stars in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  Their breakthrough second album Look Sharp! (Not to be confused with Joe Jackson’s album Look Sharp) had two of the group’s four US #1 hits in “The Look” and the ballad-y “Listen To Your Heart.”  “Dangerous,” the song that earwormed its way into today’s DVA choice, was no slouch itself, reaching #2 in early 1990 (Kept down by the AWFUL Janet Jackson song and Mecca earworm “Escapade.”)  Yet, despite all of those chart topping hits, you know how often you might hear Roxette on mainstream variety radio these days?

Apparently neither the look nor the sound aged well…

Baloney!  Roxette’s just another great late 80’s pop act that someone decided shouldn’t represent the music of the decade.  The corporate idiots who choose radio playlists definitely don’t have “The Taste”…

Hopefully I’ll be more prepared to present the next lost hit next Monday….

  1. I loved this two… and there was not one day without roxette… and I remember the time an idiot dumped me and I listened to fading like a flower till my cheap wine bottle was empty… that night the wine left me and the whiney feeling too… thanks Marie ;O)

  2. Say – whatever happened to plastic clothes anyway? I remember “Listen To Your Heart” and some others but not as much this one for some reason……….

    • Being the follow up to two #1 hits, with another #1 shortly after from the Pretty Woman soundtrack, kinda got this one buried in Roxette’s collection. It’s funny, because their label didn’t originally release this album in the US because they didn’t think we’d like their sound…

  3. Classic 80’s. Almost like cross between Pat Benetar and ABBA

This is a really good song, and I like the others you mentioned, too. I do hear one now and again on the radio. 🙂

    • I haven’t heard them much at all over the years other than my incessant VH-1 Classic viewing a couple decades ago. The late 80’s has always struck me as an era where a disproportionate amount of the most popular music from that time kinda got swept under the rug…

They were awesome. Another totally underrated and strong female voice. I had NO IDEA they were Swedish. Thanks for another happy Monday ear worm.

I know “Fading Like a Flower” and “Joyride” but not this song. This song is a lot more wishy-washy – not memorable – so I may have heard it and forgotten it.
So I’m not seeing I dislike it, exactly…

    • That’s the second mention of Fading Like a Flower, which I don’t recall at all despite it being a #2 hit here. Maybe that had something to do with me not listening to new music at the time and that song must’ve got dumped with all of Roxette’s other hits by the time I was playing catch up in the 2000’s…
