Mush!

Yukon or Bust!

This week’s Saturday Squirrel looks like he’s practicing for the Iditarod.  Look at him sprint so easily across the snowy tundra of my backyard!  Get that squirrel some booties and a handful of Scooby Snacks!

Hey! Where did all this snow come from, anyway?

Well, from my squirrel photo archive… where else?

Yes, these pictures are from February.  No, it didn’t snow here this week…. that’s kind of impossible when it gets up to 80 degrees.  But until it dries up so I don’t have to wear hip waders to the park, Saturdays will feature a lot of retro squirrels who didn’t get in the spotlight the first time around…

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. That guy also looks like a downhill skier……this boy is made for winter sports !

Maine had snow yesterday, but thankfully not us. We just got frost that killed all the little sprouts which started appearing. Nice action shot on that squirrel!

    • That little guy was running all over the place in that snow, and that’s the only picture where I even got him in the shot and not just a bunch of white! It was about 6 inches deep too, so squirrels must be good at walking on the snow as they are at walking on those thin branches…

Their feet must get really cold? And how do they find where they’ve buried nuts in all that snow?

  4. This little one is definitely a mover! I don’t ever see our squirrels in the winter as I don’t think they go out too much when it’s -40C! Over the last couple of weeks I’ve heard them quite a bit but still haven’t seen any. I did see a ground squirrel a few days ago and posted a photo of him today. Cheers.

    • I wonder what squirrels do in those really cold climates, because they normally don’t hibernate. I did check out your ground squirrel! Double Saturday Squirrel!

      • They apparently have elaborate dens with very extensive food stores. I have been here for five winters (62° N latitude) and have never seen a squirrel past October or earlier than April, so they must stay inside a lot.

  5. All squirrel snacks are hijacked, doncha know?

I’m looking forward to all the retro squirrels with their flares, shoulder pads and huge perms…

And now I’m ;aughing myself silly picturing a team of squirrels pulling a sled towards the finish line!

    *laughing*, sorry!
