It’s been four or five years since my backyard oak ruined my old corn feeder by slowly gobbling it up inside its trunk (You can see the remnants of it in the photo above), and in the meantime I’ve just been occasionally spraying the yard with a cup or two of squirrel feed to keep the hungry critters at bay. Well, I finally plopped a few dollars down and bought a new feeder, this model you see here that has a compartment which can be filled, as well as a giant screw to secure a corn cob from. I installed it Wednesday afternoon, and watched all day long as the squirrels completely ignored their new gift…
Obviously that changed, or I wouldn’t have all these lovely photos for you, now would I?
There was one on the feeder early the next morning enjoying the top of the corn cob, and I successfully opened my bedroom window and screen without frightening him to capture my new feeder’s first meal…
Here’s hoping this new feeder will lead to many more cute photos of happy, hungry Saturday Squirrels!
Have a great weekend everyone!
So cute. Love the pic of him chewing the cob.
I like that goofy look he has in the last chewing photo. As they used to say, that squirrel could eat corn on the cob through a picket fence…
So the new feeder came with a mirror, huh? Seen any of those vain critters admiring themselves yet?
It only looks like a mirror because it’s so clean and because the sun was at my back. It’s a hard plastic divider, and there’s a bin behind it that can be filled with loose feed… which can be accessed by lifting the lid. And if I want cute pictures of that, I’m gonna have to leave that cob holder empty!
Wonderful photos! Glad you got the new feeder. This cute squirrel is happy, too. 🙂
And I just saw the first fight over the feeder this morning! Put a limited access feeder, and it’s easy to pick out the dominant squirrel in the yard….
I was wondering if any fights happened yet. So, there is a hierarchy among squirrels, evidently! You’ll get some great photo opportunities coming! 🙂
Great photos! Is that a cob of dried corn?
Yep, they sell it by the bag. I used to have a hanging corn cob feeder until my oak tree swallowed it…
Gotta find one!
I need to get one of those as an additional item for snacking with this squirrel kingdom we have here. We see ten or 15 squirrels at a time most days – because we have woods behind the house. They are EVERYWHERE. But I love these corn feeders – they are what squirrels really love I think vs. stealing sunflower seeds from the birdfeeder. You’ll be getting some GREAT shots of the gang enjoying that new feeder I bet!
Pam
Yes, they LOVE the corn (“Squirrels’ favorite treat” the bag used to say), but because most people put that other seed out for the birdbrains, that’s what they usually have to make do with. It does work both ways, though, because I’ve seen the birds descend when I throw the loose corn feed out in the yard…
What a great idea and what adorable pictures! We’ll have to call him colonel!
Maybe Colonel Cobb?
Perfect!
You know of course, the word is gonna get out and those freeloading thugs are gonna bankrupt you and your food budget? 😆
I’ll become the Sally Struthers for squirrels and get people to donate to feed the squirrels with my pictures of poor, starving squirrels….
