Well, the squirrels are sure enjoying the new feeder I put out last week… stripping the corn off the cob within hours after I put it out.
But this feeder has another element to it that I was hoping to induce my squirrels into trying out, and that’s the food bin that is only accessible by lifting the lid off the top of the feeder. I knew they could get in there, because they had cleaned out what I’d dropped in the secret compartment on the first day while I wasn’t looking. If I wanted some pics of them doing a little work to earn their supper, I was going to have to leave the cob empty.
So that’s what I did…..
Saturday Squirrels will work for food….
Have a great weekend everyone!
Too funny! And some great squirrelly shots.
They are giving me plenty of material to work with as they gobble up all my corn….
Great shots!
Great shots! And great idea making them work for their food. I’ve been thinking about setting up something to make mine work a little harder. I wanted to get a little tire for a tire swing but apparently little tires are really expensive. And knowing how destructive squirrels are, they would probably chew it to pieces or something!
They would chew a tire apart if they thought there were peanuts baked into the rubber. I have a squirrel on a tire swing as one of my shelf critters, but I don’t think he’d give up his ride to be turned into an interactive restaurant.
I have already linked those squirrel adventure course videos? Mission impossible from one university researcher started it all. Then some dude wanted to find out what he could to safeguard his bird feeder. And did some really cool stunts!
Yes you did, and my squirrels never seem that ambitious. It took them a week just to figure out how to get to the swinging corn block I put out… I really thought they’d be stumped on getting the food out from under the lid, but they do have some brains after all…
They do, and the more you test them, the more they will use them.
Oooh, I found a new one, dating back 8 days:
WOW….getting that new feeder has sure given you some GREAT squirrel shots (sounds like a weird drink at the bar doesn’t it?!). Anyway, that guy has it all figured out – eat everything you can then go into the bin for more. Cool!
Pam
That’s pretty much what he’s doing too, while chasing away everyone else! The only downside to not scattering the food is that it encourages the bullies…
Glad you’re making them work for their summer. They can be such freeloaders!
Well, they won’t cut my grass or wash my car….
