Once upon a time, humans lived off the land just like wild animals do. We ate nuts and berries, and if we were really hungry, we hunted down a woolly mammoth to roast over the fire. People, even just a few hundred years ago, didn’t eat potato chips or hot dogs or chili chileh because that stuff didn’t exist. But if you went back in time and treated Julius Caesar to a bag of Cheetos, no doubt he’d have had orange-stained fingers as he was being stabbed to death by Brutus for not sharing his treats.
While it’s no longer strange to see humans eating junk food, it is still funny to see animals partaking in this dreaded “people food.” But just like humans sealed their fates by becoming hopelessly (and helplessly) addicted to unhealthy food, most animals can’t resist the temptation of salty, greasy goodness when they find our discarded culinary treasures. Let’s face it, the worse something is for your body, the better it tastes, and that truism seems to apply to a wide variety of the earth’s fauna.
So with that in mind, you’ll understand why this squirrel is happily munching away at a piece of pizza it found at the park this past summer. And not only is it enjoying this Americanized Italian delicacy normally reserved only for humans, but it brought it high up into a tree with him so he wouldn’t have to share with his buddies!
My 37th favorite Saturday Squirrel of all time living the high life! Now somebody fetch him a cola to wash it down with…
A piece of pizza, he doesn’t know it is too salty and greasy. On the other hand we know and eat our pizzas happily.
Squirrels (and other animals, I suspect) love our food as much as we do. I would imagine they find lots of junk food in the trash cans at the park…
Clearly that’s an Italian squirrel.
Our neighbors brought us some homemade Christmas cookies the other day. Lovely gesture, but they were pretty horrible. I put them out fur the evening critters… skunks, fox and raccoons… and they were gone by morning.
😉
LOL, the cookies were gone, or the skunks, fox and raccoons? I throw just about anything I don’t eat out for the animals, which will soon include a nice chunk of turkey left over from Mom’s…
The cookies disappeared. I don’t usually throw anything other than veggies and fruit.
Really cute, and looks like he’s enjoying the taste. I have a photo of a prairie dog eating a cheeto. 🙂
A prairie dog with orange stained paws would be cute! I love watching critters eat “people food,” and I don’t think a little will hurt them…
haha they are cute when they do that. 🙂
Gosh I’d love to know what toppings that guy prefers……
Pam
Acorns, corn kernels, and bacon. Definitely NOT pineapple!
No way…squirrels never share with anyone! Hope that leftover tasted yummy.
I don’t share my pizza either… though I don’t think Ody would care for it.
Now I’m hungry for pizza…
I’ll see if he dropped the leftovers and send them right over air mail!
