Barely even swept up all of the confetti and 2023 already has you feeling down? Well, don’t worry, because there’s still fifty-two Mondays in this year, and The Nest will be using every one of them to lift your spirits the musical way! This is the day each week we dig through the music library of Father Time to bring forward another great lost hit to toast from that giant sparkly ball of fun we like to call the Dusty Vinyl Archive! DJ Scratchy’s still partying like it’s 1999, while someone explains to the Sponkies who Dick Clark was. Here’s to another year of great retro muzak!
It’s hard to believe that the Dusty Vinyl Archive turns seven years old this week! While it’s been interrupted for a few countdowns and Mecca Muzak interludes over that time, the DVA has featured over 260 classic (and maybe not-so-classic) songs over its long Monday run now. Somewhat amazingly, the fourth song I jotted down on the first ever list I made up of potential DVA honorees has still never been used. Granted, the song was barely a decade old when I first jotted it in my blog notebook in 2016… so it’s aged a bit more now to get that dusty vinyl feel, but still sounds better than ever!
Collective Soul burst onto the scene in 1994 when their song “Shine” because a surprise national hit. They followed that success up with two more awesome 90’s anthems in “The World I Know” and “December.” I really love all three of those songs, which is odd since I generally dislike most 90’s bands and what passed for music that decade. So it’s funny that my favorite songs from one of my favorite 90’s groups was actually released in the post-millennial year of 2005…
I can’t be the only one who gets David Bowie vibes when I hear this song….
“Better Now” was a comeback song of sorts for Collective Soul a decade after their heyday, and by “of sorts” I mean that it fared decently on the Mainstream rock charts, but couldn’t even crack the US Hot 100. Though the Georgia band did find one country who loved “Better Now” as much as I did….
Come back next Monday for another great lost hit that’s sure to soothe your collective souls….
I actually hadn’t heard this one. Love it, though! They’ve been a favorite band for a long time, and there’s just something about their sound that I like most everything they do. 🙂
They’ve got a wide variety of sounds in their songs as well! This one and their three big 90’s hits all have a different feel to them…
I’m glad you posted this one, as I’ve not kept up with their music in quite awhile. 🙂
Thanks for the musical uplift today-I needed that to start out the week. This tune definitely has some Bowie vibes. Well done…and happy Monday.
Hadn’t heard this one either for some reason but LOVE….IT…..They sure had a versatile repertoire.

This is one of those songs that screams “feel good” to me and has universal appeal! Can’t believe it wasn’t a bigger hit…
I spotted three squirrels in my yard today–all at once! Course, I had just put out lots of nuts and mealworms and birdseed, but still, I’m gonna take it as a good omen! Ha!
Mealworms! Cringe!
Yeah, I felt sort of sad for the little now-desiccated critters. 😦 But the ravenous little cheepy birds certainly had no qualms about gobbling them all up!
That’s quite a cool and funky song. DVA has started the year on a high…
It’s all downhill from here now…
