Squirrels were born to climb, and their claws are quite adept at allowing them to cling to anything wooden. So it’s only natural that they love to climb wooden utility poles, which can lead to some pretty nasty results for both human and squirrel.
As for my experience in squirrel photography, this is more of an issue at home… where I’ve gotten some pretty cool shots of them running across the wires and flirting with a shocking death while playing around the manmade electrical equipment. So it’s weird that one of my best series of pics of a squirrel on a utility pole actually came at the local park, where there are many more trees than poles for them to climb.
It all started innocently enough on a September morn’ back in 2021…..
I followed this guy from a picnic shelter to a nearby pole with the electrical box that powered the lights to the tennis courts behind that chain link fence. He didn’t seem to take too kindly to my invasion of his privacy, and decided that the best way to flee my presence was up…
He went all the way to the top of the pole, and I was quite happy to see his head stick out over the splintered edge…
The view must have been fantastic from up there…
Hmmmmm…. maybe he’s not up there for fun. What if the watcher is now the one being watched!?!?
Oops, I was spotted! The show featuring both human and squirrel voyeur is now over. But at least Big Brother Squirrel sealed up the #33 spot in my All Time Saturday Squirrel countdown before the government agents came to take me away….
Great pics. Wish I was that limber!
I remember my climbing days. A loooong, loooooooooooooong time ago.
I love the way they first freeze when they know someone is watching them!
I wish the freeze was a bit longer, because I’d have even more neat pics of them!
So much for the saying “birds’ eye view” – I think Mr. Squirrel has trumped the danged birds with this spying position!

Another victory of the squirrels in their ongoing war with the winged ones…
Well done-I’m surprised he stuck around long enough for multiple pics.
I think it helped he really didn’t have anywhere else to go but down where I was. Being kind to my photo subjects, once I had my share of pics, I walked away so he could break free…
A squirrel stalker – you better watch your back…
That’s why I have a cat to protect me….. who am I kidding? Ody would probably help him.
