The Tenth Annual Contest Of Whatever!

Ten years, and creativity tastes just as groovy as ever!

It’s February and you know what that means……

***RECORD SCRATCHING SOUND***

Oh, wait…. it’s March already.

So it’s a month late, but it’s time for that Evil Squirrel’s Nest tradition known simply as The Contest Of Whatever!  Each and every year beginning in 2014, The Nest has challenged its readers and anyone else who wants to join in to wow us with their wonderful creativity!  Check out the official page for The CoW to see all of the fun themes and winners from every one of the past nine contests!

Enjoy a slice of Moofoo® while you peruse the results…

The Contest rules are so simple that even a child who was dropped on its head can do it!  All you need to do is create an official entry for the Contest of Whatever.  You may use any artistic medium or combination thereof you desire….. writing, drawing, sculpture, interpretive dance, mime….. the possibilities are endless!  It only needs to be something you can post on your blog to share with the world!

No animals were harmed in the making of this Contest of Whatever entry…. except maybe an imaginary possum or two.

Besides being something you can post, the only other stipulation on your CoW entry is that it in some way incorporates the official contest prompt.  These have varied quite a bit throughout the years, and this year’s will be something completely different than what I’ve done in the past as well!

The prompt theme for the 2023 Contest of Whatever is…..

As a huge calendar nerd, I don’t think I’ve seen an impossible date show up more often than November 31st…. so let’s have a little fun with this nonexistent day!

Just come up with some nifty little idea that somehow involves November 31 and post the entry on your blog before the contest deadline which this year will be the night of Thursday April 6th.  Be sure to include a pingback to THIS POST in your entry, and feel free to link to it in the comments since pingbacks can never be trusted if you wish, as I wouldn’t want to miss anyone’s submission!

How do I make a pingback from a Commodore 64?

I will post all entries on Friday April 7th, with my usual slate of “judges” Mitzi, Snuggle and Fuzzywig providing their entertaining and allegedly witty banter.  Then I will choose one winner based on which entry I believed was the most deserving of them all, and another winner based on a draw of the cards among all remaining entries.  Contest results will be posted on Sunday April 9th!  Yes, everyone has a shot at being a winner in the Contest of Whatever even if you think your imagination is always out to lunch!

You never know whose card Mitzi will choose…

And of course there are the prizes!  Both winners may choose any one item valued at $20 USD or less from my Cafepress shop!

Who can’t use a Rainbow Donkey mug?

I really hope everyone who is able to participates this year!  I admit to waffling on whether to bother with the CoW any longer due to declining interest and participation over the past few years…. but I couldn’t just stop at nine editions and have to at least run a tenth anniversary edition!  And I really do love all of the cool and clever ways everyone spins off the contest prompt!  You have a little over four weeks to get those creative juices flowing!  Let’s make CoW X the best edition ever and get your entry posted by April 6th!!!!

Don’t make You-Know-Who have to hound you to play!

Nov 31 huh? I’ll see if I can come up with something. 🙂

  2. I shall endeavor to get my creative juices flowing again instead of just sitting there clogging up my veins.

Hi ES. It’s been a while. Not gonna enter the contest, but I will leave thoughts.

November stewed and steamed. October 31 had Halloween. December 31 had New Years Eve. Why did they get all the fun? Even February was able to add a day every four years. Maybe November could make a deal with February. If not, November had other plots.

If Erich Kästner (he of the Lottie and Lisa fame) could write a whole book of the 35th of May, I should be able to do something for the 31st of November, no?

As you may have read in my SYW I’m very busy playing games, watching TV and whatnot but I’ll see if I can squeeze CoW in!

  13. November 31. I’ll have to see what Vlad is doing that day. Yes, COW days are the happiest days of the year!

I have my piece ready to go–how do I do a pingback? Is it just copying and pasting your blog link into my post when I introduce the contest and the piece I’ve written?
