You’ve probably seen your pets, no matter how much they might seem to hate each other, take a break from all the pandemonium every once in a while and settle down next to each other like they’re the bestest BFF’s. Dogs and cats have no problem cozying up with each other, or even interspecies snuggling.
So you may have assumed squirrels have the same social habits. Run around at one hundred miles per hour and pick fights with each other all day…. and then when the sugar crash hits, lay down and take naps together. That’s not how it actually works, as I’ve always read that squirrels will rarely lay with each other outside of the presence of extreme conditions where shelter and warmth are more important than their preference for solitude.
And for the most part, that’s what I’ve witnessed in all my years of watching and photographing squirrels. So I was genuinely surprised (and simultaneously delighted) to look out my window one Spring day in 2014 and see the two squirrels completely chilling with each other together on a small metal bar off my backyard utility pole!
I wanted to see these two a bit better than from just my window, so I went outside to continue shooting…
That really doesn’t look like the most ideal place for cuddling, but hey, that threaded bar sure did get these two in the mood… which in turn made them my 24th favorite Saturday Squirrels of All Time!
An yes – I remember this one and it remains a favorite – nothing like a couple of snuggling squirrels to bring a smile (to us and probably them too!).
Pam
There may have been more than just a smile being shared between these two….
they are like my dogs … if they were squirrels LOL
Yeah, I remember Spilly and Ody doing the same…
Aw. Even squirrels have to call a cease fire now and then.
Make Love, Not War…
Delightful! One gets to be the pillow…
Brings new meaning to the term body pillow…
🙂 And soft and warm!
Goodness, I’ve never seen two squirrels together like that. They’re usually spinning away from one another at breakneck speeds. Pawsome capture!
Yeah, they must have just both got worn out at the same time in the same spot…
They finally find a few minutes just to be alone together when some bloke with a camera shows up…
Lucky for me there are no laws stating that squirrels have a right to privacy…
