Spring is the time that nature comes back to life after the long and cold winter… and April showers generally bring colorful flowers. But many of those flowers aren’t considered pretty or even welcome to the average homeowner.
This time of the year, the grass everywhere is full of little flowering yellow dandelions and purple wild violets… much like you see in my photo above which I took at the park a couple weeks ago. As one who’s not big on the popular suburban concept of a “lawn,” I find the yellow and purple dotted landscape this time of the year to look quite pretty. Even the towering white puffballs to come have a certain charm to them.
And so on this Earth Day, remember that all of nature’s creations deserve to some love, even weeds. And yes, especially the Saturday Squirrels who pose so well with my favorite Spring flowers…
Have a great weekend everyone!
I love the violets, of which we have none… but hate the dandelions, in which we are covered. Although up here it’s just starting to green so it will be a while before they take over.
I love the yellow and purple combo the two combine for. Yellow/purple is very underrated, but they’re complimentary colors…
Very cute squirrel in that pose. I like all colorful flowers even if they are considered weeds. 🙂
Happy Saturday!
Flowers are flowers, I say!
I say the same and enjoy the pretty colors. 🙂
Lovely wildflowers. Do the squirrels eat them?
I wouldn’t think so, but they nibble on almost everything…
Yay for “weeds”. I just read this piece on one of the environmental sites that say to hold off mowing your lawns to give pollinators a chance to refuel. I love dandelions and other flowers as ground cover over a monotype (and toxic/water hungry) green lawn! So, yeahm love your Earth Day post!
I’d love nothing more than to NEVER mow my lawn, but city regulations dictate otherwise. And I’m lucky to not have one of those evil HSA’s to demand regular mowing AND weeding…
Ha, yeah, I got reported by the neighbour and had to pay a fine. Sigh. LOL! (I couldn’t afford to get rid of the grass, sadly.)
I fair amount of my garden colour is “weeds”, they add a nice bit of colour!
That’s right. Who wants a boring lawn that’s nothing but thousands of identical blades of grass?
Earth Day wouldn’t be complete without a sprinkling of weed-flowers and a gratuitous photo or two or three of a squirrel!
Pam
All of Earth’s children should be celebrated! Even man eating otters…
With all the issues with the bee population, I’ve begun to embrace the dandelions in our lawn rather than rue them because they help feed the bees. I wish we had the violets too—they’re so pretty!
The violets are out in force every April here, and oddly enough I never really noticed them until I started taking squirrel pics a decade ago and noticed them in the photos! They’re very colorful, but not as showy as the dandelions…
