One of my blogging traditions that actually predates the birth of Evil Squirrel’s Nest is the “squirrel o’lantern” I carve every Halloween. When the calendar flips to November, I always toss the organic piece of artwork out by my backyard oak to rot in peace. And hopefully………. HOPEFULLY……. attract a curious squirrel or two.
My luck with this experiment was always bad. With the exception of one squirrel who’s yet to come in this countdown, the critters largely ignored the oversized gourd…. at least while I was paying attention. I’ve seen so many pictures and videos of squirrels chewing up and going crazy with pumpkins, and yet my squirrels never seemed to be in the Halloween spirit.
That finally changed in 2021 when I was able to watch one spunky little squirrel thoroughly enjoy the pumpkin treat I left out for him!
As much as it charmed me to catch a squirrel chowing down on my erstwhile Halloween decoration, the photo that really bowled me over and that clinched this guy’s high spot in the all time Saturday Squirrel countdown was this absolutely adorable reaction shot!
I even managed to lure a squirrel INTO the squirrel o’lantern the following year, but that came two months after I put together this countdown and will have to settle for an honorable mention…
super sweet… I think it was a squirrel-girl…
These are simply precious!

So cute! I always like seeing your squirrel photos. We don’t have them around our house. 🙂
That smile is priceless……he or she is definitely a pumpkin-pulp-a-holic!

I loved the photos – has to be Peter the Pumpkin Eater.
Mmm, decomposing pumpkin, really hits the spot…
Better late than never, I always say…but Peter looks more like a girl. Penny, perhaps?
The squirrel I’m sort of friends with, he loves pecans. He loves them so much that if there are no pecans because I forgot to throw some out of the window for him, he will get in here and try and get them.
Seeing a squirrel eat a pumpkin though is without a doubt the cutest thing I’ve ever seen hah
