As you might have deduced from the name of this blog, squirrels build nests in the trees
they live in. Since they don’t have money to shop at The Home Depot for building materials, nor can they hire a licensed contractor to build their dream nest, squirrels are totally on their own when it comes to constructing their cozy little slice of heaven and just about any old materials they find lying around will do for the job. A couple weeks ago, I caught one of my front yard squirrels collecting insulation for the nest he has in the split of that tree, and was lucky enough to get a few pictures of him for this week’s Saturday Squirrel.
The squirrel would scavenge my yard for dead leaves and small twigs. Despite a wide selection to choose from, he was very selective about what dead brush he’d pick up and take back to the job site…
When he was finally satisfied with the quality of the building materials he selected, he would scamper up the tree, do some quick installation, and come back down for the next load…
As fun as it is to watch the squirrels collect their nuts in the Fall, it is just as interesting to watch them build their nests in the Spring. And given the blast of cold rain we’ve been getting for the past 24 hours, this squirrel is probably very glad to have made his nest just a bit warmer and cozier….
Enjoy your weekend, whether it’s inside or outside of the nest!

I picture you out there taking pictures, saying, ” That’s right, work it work it.” 😉
LOL, if I were outside, they’d have never come out of that nest. All the pictures came from my living room window….
Nice shots from inside!!
I’ve got some good angles… especially on the front yard since the windows go down to almost the floor. Of course, if I don’t trim those weeds just outside the window, I won’t have much of a view for long…
Better get trimming dude. 🙂
He is so sweet and clever. Does he live with other Squirrels or by himself.
I think there are at least two squirrels in that tree. That’s how many I saw bolt out of there one day right before a storm hit…
He’s so cute and industrious, busily building up his new nest! I hope it is warm and cozy for him and (perhaps) his squirrel family, too. 🙂
I would love to see some little ones running around the yard sometime! Baby squirrels are such a rare sight to see….
