Arbor Day

tree trimming

Like I said in my previous post, the local power company has dispatched the tree surgeons to my neighborhood to do a little amputation of mine and my neighbors’ trees that are too close to their power lines.  This morning, they are using my yard as their base.  Lovely, I didn’t want to sleep today anyway….

Ameren Electric has been on a massive tree trimming binge ever since Mother Nature yanked the utility’s pants down around its ankles 6 years ago.  Back on July 19, 2006, the freakest of freak storms pummeled the St. Louis area out of nowhere (nowhere as in, out of the damn NNE! ).  The storm had hellacious winds that ripped the power grid to shreds.  And just when the linemen were starting to get things back under control, another storm almost as powerful as the first hit just 40 hours later!  Much of the area was without power for a week or more… in the middle of a heat wave no less.

Just when Ameren was wiping the egg of its face, four months later on November 30th, one of the worst ice storms in the area’s history struck, and once again many people went a week or longer without power…. this time during a cold spell!  By the time a second and third ice storm hit that winter, people had understandably had enough, and Ameren had to do something to fix its image….

F-f-f-f-f-f-friggin power c-c-c-c-c-company!

Thus, why I am still up today.  After six years, the tree trimming project has finally made its way into my neighborhood.  I’ve watched all morning as my backyard oak tree and the one in my neighbor’s yard have been sliced and diced on their northern ends, where the power lines come down through our alley ditch.  My poor squirrels will be lost with all of their usual methods of navigating between the trees and power lines removed…

Their ditch rover looks like something out of Star Wars…

I thought they were making a mess in my backyard….

Leave them there! Maybe I won’t have to cut my grass anymore!

But then I looked out my front window….

I’m trapped by foliage!!!!

He might have my yard clear by the weekend…

Oh well, I wasn’t planning on leaving the house anyway until work tonight.  And not everyone can say their front yard was turned into a temporary pile of twigs.  I just hope my squirrels understand this wasn’t my idea…. I already think they don’t like me as it is!

  1. Our local utility company comes through ever two years and hacks away at the corner pine tree. I feel your pain. I hope the squirrels recover and find a safe place to run, nest and hibernate.
