Squirrels can truly do some amazing things that few other specimens in the animal kingdom can even imagine. Their death-defying acrobatics without a net are awe-inspiring, their ingenuity at achieving their goals is unbelievable, their irresistible cuteness just can not be matched. But probably the most amazing thing that squirrels can do is what this week’s Saturday Squirrel is showing off for us in this post.
How in the hell is that fat, acorn-stuffed squirrel balancing his rotund figure on that branch that thin enough to snap between your fingers!?!?!?
Click on the close up of that picture, and notice how perfectly he has his fuzzy little body balanced over that twig! Absolute genius, and it’s totally instinctive to him. The branch barely even bows under his weight since he has it distributed as wide as he physically can across it’s length.
Remember when you were a kid, back in the days before the Safety Nazis ruined everything, and you were allowed to climb trees? Remember how the higher you got, the thinner the branches got, and the more they threatened to send your overalled butt to the emergency room? Now do you think you’d ever dare venture out onto a thin stick poking out from a branch like this guy is?
Of course not, because while you may have pretended to be The Lone Ranger or Michael Jordan, you knew you weren’t a squirrel and didn’t have their other-worldly superpowers. But you sure did envy them, and idolized the fluffy-tailed magicians. That’s why now, in the internet age, there are so many squirrel blogs. Just lie there like the Buddha and amaze us, oh sciurine one! On the sixth day, squirrels rock!
I get the ‘bends’ just looking at him up there.
LOL! I wonder if that squirrel would be brave enough to do that hanging off the CN Tower….?
Better him than me 🙂
“Remember when you were a kid, back in the days before the Safety Nazis ruined everything, and you were allowed to climb trees?”
Yes, I do! I feel sorry for all the little ones who aren’t allowed to do anything fun anymore. ~Lynda
Yes! Take the kids off the leash and let them live a little!
Funny funny stuff, thank you for sharing and making my day.
You’re welcome! I’m always happy when my squirrely presentations make someone’s day! 🙂
I love the way you write. It made me feel good that my friends and I have been taking kids to Barwon Heads every year for ever. We let them ride bikes and climb trees sometimes with out supervision. Your post dissolved any guilt I had about letting them have some time away from grown-ups and a chance just to be kids. and then come back home and be stuffed to the gills. Great pictures. The safety natzis are alive and well in Melbourne but they are not allowed at Barwon Heads. : )
YAY for Barwon Heads! Where a kid can be a kid!
Hope that’s squirrel’s feelings weren’t hurt from you calling him a fatty.
LOL, I think he’s been called worse things by better people before.
