I love squirrels. I love most all furry creatures. Those warm feelings, however, generally do not extend to our fine feathered friends. I do not feed the birds… there are plenty of people who do that already. And what do you get as a thank you? Your car used as their own personal toilet and swarms of starlings each winter who’d rather bitch in large numbers about how cold it is rather than fly south like most reasonable birds would. These two hoodlums from a massive starling swarm that swooped down in my ‘hood back in Janaury do not look like the type of birds a true hater like me would want to cross. Seriously, look at those faces! One wrong move, and I’ll end up with my eyeballs pecked out. I hope they’re not mad I didn’t put them at #1…

ungratefulness… berds is your name! we couldn’t use our garden furnitures this year because of a gazillion of doves… it was awful to be outside… they even bombed my coffee mug, ewwww!
So much for being the berd of peace. Maybe that’s why doves made Prince cry…

Birds aren’t my thing, either. They all look kind of mean to me. These two in particular.
These two look like a couple of wise guys who might crack a bat over my head if I don’t start feeding them instead of the squirrels. I have never seen such mean looking critters as these two…
I usually like birds – but these two look sinister.
They are definitely very evil looking. If they come back around, I’ll sic Gypsy on them…
They are grackles. Starlings have a stubbier tail and a lighter beak. We get lots of grackles. They make a noise like a rusty spring or squeaky door. They are a tough bird. We had one one season with one leg. I called him ‘Peg’.
That may be what they are… I just assumed starlings since I know they’re a nuisance bird. We get them in biblical hordes in the late Fall and winter, and the noise they make will wake the dead…
But in their defence, birds help control bugs in the garden. Squirrels eat tomatoes and strawberries from the garden. See where I’m going with this?
Yes I do. Birds eat the pests, while squirrels help eliminate the food source, keeping the pests from coming around at all. Smart critters, those squirrels!
Now that’s some kind of circular thinking if I do say so.
One of them looks downright snarly! We don’t have those starlings here. They must be a different group of birds. I find birds really interesting and have since I was a kid. But I find most animals interesting … excluding bugs.
I am not happy among the multi-legged crunchy crowd, especially spiders. I’m trying to get over that, but they scare me.
Meanwhile, bear tracks are showing up all over the area an whether or not there will be places for them to hibernate will be interesting. Also, because the weather has been so erratic — last year we had two weeks of Summer in February immediately followed by three blizzards in two weeks — well, I guess we’ll see.
These birds do look rather snarly…. I like that word. They will probably scare away your bears or other wandering critters. They may even intimidate The Duke. They are all yours, I’ll direct them to your feeder…
These guys have that “look” in their eyes……they’re trying to intimidate you into feeding them…..Some kind of neighborhood mafia???

Damn whiny bitching starlings. These two are probably the most amiable of the bunch, and they look like they want you dead.
I hope the squirrel uprising happens before the bird uprising, or I will probably be a goner…
They do have a pretty fearsome look, but I feed all the birds and give the squirrels acorns. So I’ll feed the birds for you!
There are a lot of people picking up my slack. And I guess that helps me get pictures of sinister looking birds like this…
I’m very fond of the chickadees, juncos and Stellar’s jays that hang around my yard but I don’t think I would have such warm feelings toward birds if there were any as creepy as these two hanging around my house. They’re quite evil looking!
Imagine if these two started pounding on your patio door wanting to be fed. You might have to call in the SWAT team to disperse them…
