For the most part, squirrels live a life of isolation. They rarely nest together, refuse to share their food with each other, and generally like to chase other squirrels away from their tree. They are nature’s curmudgeons who would rather rudely tell your children to get off his limb!
But even squirrels have their moments.
There is a crossbar on the utility pole in my backyard that serves as a nice resting perch for my squirrels as they scurry back and forth from the ground to the network of wires above. I’ve gotten some nice pictures of squirrels taking a time out there before, and thought I had another one when I prepared to take this picture. But as I zoomed the camera in, I noticed much to my delight that it wasn’t just one squirrel lying there taking a breather, but TWO squirrels cuddling up with each other! My little guys know how to get into the Saturday Squirrel spotlight!
Generally, any photo I have of two squirrels interacting with each other involves blurry high speed chases through the tree. I had never seen a pair of sciurines sharing a non-mating tender moment together out in the open before! I just wish I’d been on the other side of them so I could have gotten both of their faces in the shot.
I just had to try to get a picture of this adorable scene from the great outdoors… which I knew would be nearly impossible since my squirrels are so easy to spook. But I did get one photo of them together in the sunlight before they spotted me…
Have a great weekend with your favorite squirrel, everyone!
That’s an awful lot of cute packed into one post there, ES. 😉
Yes it is! (Sorry I didn’t respond to this sooner, but it got stuck in the spam filter…)
Such cute pics and nice to see them getting along and being friends. 🙂
Even squirrels have been known to behave, sometimes…..
Aw! I have some more Nutty pics…she is a girl and has two babies! I will email them to you soon.
You have pictures of squirrel babies!?!? I must see them! 🙂
Do you think the other squirrels tease them about their relationship? Call them names? Like those nasty reindeer and poor old Rudolph of the shining nose fame?
I’m sure they will. But they’ll also be the ones going back to the nest alone at sundown….
they really enjoyed it, the “O” the guy formed with his tail (in#18) says all :o)
LOL! Now he’s gonna have to tell all his friends…
Soooooooo cute.
I had no idea they were loners. But they’re definitely not introverts.
No, they really come out of their shells… um, tails outside the nest.
While they are loners, squirrels can become social animals under the right conditions. Obviously, these two squirrels were cold and needed each others’ warmth! 🙂
Love these photos– especially Ralph, the pillow. We have squirrels all over our property but I’ve never seen them together like this. Now I wonder what’s really going on up there in those trees that the squirrels are not letting me see.
What goes on in the nest stays in the nest! 😉
Well, of course it does. Silly of me to think otherwise.
Then how come I had to chase a half-dozen from nesting together after they chewed out the screen to my back porch one winter, ESN?
Must have been a communist squirrel sect…
I think the key word here is “winter”. I believe they’ll agree to stop fighting but only for the duration of a cold snap…
Deep freezes make for squirrel fellowship, I guess. That’s how it was on my porch.
Ahhhh, I glossed over the word “winter”. Yes, extreme conditions will make even squirrels come together for the greater good…
So cute. Maybe it is the afterglow and you will be seeing babies, as well.
I’ve been on the lookout for babies since the March day I caught them getting it on under the tree. I am cautiously hopeful to eventually see one…
So sweet. 🙂
Squirrel love is adorable!
Poor bottom squirrel probably has a crick in its neck now.
That’s OK, I think this may eventually lead to a massage!
Aw…
So cute, isn’t it? 🙂
Reblogged this on Gems favourite things.
Awww….. thanks for sharing.
I like to spread the squirrel love… literally.
Brim full of asher should change the lyrics to “everybody needs a squirrel for a pillow”.
Squirrel pillows would be awesome. And the other side would still feel cool when you flipped it over…
