Foxy Squirrel

Even before my post on Wednesday of some of the Squirrels of Flickr that instantly became one of my most popular on this blog, I was planning to use some actual professional photos for this week’s Saturday squirrel.  Earlier in the week, I stumbled upon the blog of a photographer from my neck of the woods named Danny Brown.  In particular, it was this post of some photos he took at Forest Park in St. Louis.  I naturally “liked” the post, and Danny was kind enough to email me with a couple of great photos of a fox squirrel he had recently taken.  He was kind enough to allow me to post them on my blog, and I thank him again for that!  I have still never seen any sciurine species other than the common grey with my own eyes, but maybe I need to keep a lookout, because these beautiful foxes are obviously out there somewhere!

Dude! I couldn't be more out in the open! Do I have to throw this at your forehead?

The brownish and even orangish hues of this variety of squirrel make it extremely eye-catching and handsome…. almost seeming like a cross between the grey and the red.  I guess we’ll know what the babies would look like if ES and MBRS ever did get together….

Danny’s wildlife photography can be found monthly in the Missouri Conservationalist in a series titled “Plants and Animals”.

No doubt, being a squirrel yourself, you know that the grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is found in colour variants including reddish ones http://www.wildlifeonline.me.uk/squirrels.html I’m fairly sure that S. carolinensis doesn’t hybridise with the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) http://www.wildlifeuk.net/squirrel-hybrid-t-2441.html

    • I guess that’s only possible in the cartoon world. But since you mentioned it, I have always cracked up that MBRS’s species is called sciurus vulgaris! If ever a name fit….

Yes, I suppose that’s quite funny It basically means ‘common squirrel’ which makes me laugh because I grew up in the English class system. You can’t hold your hazelnut like that, my dear! That would be common! It might even be vulgar.

  3. I’d like to paint the top one and work the bottom in CPs…gorgeous!

Those walnuts are good for throwing when they’re like that. Look out, Annie!
