I obviously have a soft spot for squirrelly artwork, and I am blessed to have many friends in my other internet community who are very creative. Above you will see this week’s Saturday Squirrel, and while he is not alive, does not eat my corn nor prance loudly on my roof, he is nevertheless one of my favorite rodents. This was a quilt I received back in June from a lady who goes by christie1111 over on my message board (she comments here occasionally). Quilting is one of her hobbies, and I was extremely honored that she made this piece for me….. not only once, but twice!
What’s the deal with that, you ask?
Christie had originally made the squirrel quilt for me in the Fall of 2009. She packed it up, dropped it in the mail, and gave me several not so subtle hints that I might have a surprise coming my way. Naturally, I was checking the mailbox every day….
But there was never anything special there… unless you live for junk mail and bills.
Enter Hottie.
Several days after I first began looking out for a special delivery, Hottie happened to ask me if I had received anything special in the mail. I naturally assumed she was in on christie’s secret and was wondering why I hadn’t said anything about it yet. But it turns out, she was asking me because she had also sent me a little gift in the mail at the same time christie had! And after a week, I had still received neither package. What was up!?!?
What makes this an even more bizarre coincidence, and provides a plausible explanation to the mystery, is the fact that christie and Hottie both live in the same Connecticut town, and likely sent off their packages from the very same post office within 24 hours of each other. While misdelivery and post-delivery thievery can’t be ruled out, more than likely something was amiss in the United States Post Office chain between CT and IL for that delivery cycle… and it intercepted a pair of packages I would have really loved to have gotten. Given that neither sender used delivery confirmation, inside theft at the USPS is the most likely scenario. Obviously, to this day, I have still never received either package.
And while christie was obviously very upset over having her work of art vanish into thin air without it ever getting to who it was made for, she did eventually recraft it, and this time sent it to me WITH delivery confirmation.

And with Snuggle Bear!!! If you stocked the laundry aisle like I did for over a decade, you’d understand…
It is one of the crown jewels of my sciurine collection. A true work of art!
Enjoy your Saturday!
shouldn’t “hottie” have playboy bunny-ears on her left hip?
Love the quilt, and so kind of your friend to make you a replacement. I also love the kitty. That cat is a dead ringer for a sweet kitty we used to have named Mystra.
Ody is very photogenic. I have pictures of him with most of my squirrel bling. Mystra is a cool name, too!
Wow! That is a stunning quilt. and an amazing story. and the absolute best cartoon of “waiting for the postie”
Move over Charlie Brown, ES is the new king of “waiting for the postie”
Buster probably sold it off to some strange comic character passing thru, lol.
Or ate it. That would explain his past bout with quilted poo….
Apparently he didn’t understand the difference between a quilt and quilted TP, lol.
Beautiful quilt 🙂 And glad it made it to you this time 🙂
I am not much into quilting but that is a beautiful squirrel inspired piece. You have such nice and talented friends.
Awww, Thanks for posting this. Yes, to this day the first quilt’s dissappearance remains a mystery. The fact that the back of the quilt has my name and home town as well as your name means someone who has it knows it wasn’t made for them. I am hoping there is a special place for them. Or maybe it will be one of those things that turn up 40 years from now.
It is beautiful!! You have super talented friends!
OMG, a squirrel quilt! That’s adorable. What a treasure!
It sucked that the first one got lost in the mail… but had it not, I may have never got Snuggle Bear with the second attempt. Hmmmm…. now is that a good thing or a bad thing?
