As hard as it may be to believe, December is already upon us… and that means later on this month I’ll be celebrating the second anniversary of my Evil Squirrel’s Nest blog. I started this whole venture without much in the way of expectations other than providing another public outlet for my art and the zany group of characters that evolved from it. I didn’t think I would eventually have a weekly comic strip that has now been running for over a year and a half. I didn’t think I would make so many new friends over here… and not just friends, but GOOD friends! And I sure as hell never guessed that after 24 months of blogging, I would now be the proud owner of an entire pony family.
Wait… what? How in the heck did this happen?
Well, it all started with me taking the talented Jennifer from Squirrel Picnic up on a Make-It challenge that by the end of August netted me this magnificent crocheted figure of my surprisingly popular Rainbow Donkey character…
If you missed it, you can see Jennifer’s post with the story behind RD’s creation, as well as the pattern for making your own RD by clicking on the picture of him in my sidebar.
At the same time this was going on, another one of my blogging friends Alice was holding a contest to find the most Sparky-like blogger… aka, annoying as heck! The prize was a completely over-the-top bedazzled by hand 1980’s style My Little Pony doll. I entered without really thinking I’d stand a chance of winning…. but much to my surprise, it turns out I am indeed a very annoying blogger and received this glitter drenched filly for being victorious in early October.
If you missed this story, the relevant contest results post can also be found on my sidebar.
So with Rainbow Donkey and Sparklepony now sharing space in my computer room, it seemed inevitable that they might end up as more than just good friends. It was speculated on in my post announcing Sparklepony’s arrival, as well as in the comments section by my readers. The only question was whether a clumsy oaf of a donkicorn could possibly attract the interest of a rather high class sparkly pony girl….
The fascinating possibilities of what the offspring of Rainbow Donkey and Sparklepony would look like was just the challenge my beloved “Aunt” Sharon from the Gentlestitches blog had to take up. She set out to create not just one “sparkledonkicorn”, but beautiful twins! She introduced her two tiny creations last week, which I had reblogged here. The two little sponkies finally made the long 9,000 mile trip from Australia to the States and arrived in my mailbox yesterday! They are so cute!!!
Sharon does fabulous work creating the neatest amigurumi creatures! Make sure you check out her blog to see more of her impressive and adorable handiwork!
Even my curmudgeonly cat Ody thinks these two are just darling!
Here is the whole family as they now appear on my collectible shelf. I think it’s quite obvious that the little red-eyed sponky is going to be a Daddy’s Girl!
To think that this lovely equine family came together in the relatively short span of three months, and thanks to the efforts of three different blogging pals of mine! I feel so happy and blessed to have such wonderful friends here on WordPress! A big thanks not only to Aunt Sharon for bringing these wonderful little twin sponkies into the world… but to Jennifer and Alice as well for the gifts that inspired this all! I will love and treasure my little pony family for as long as I’m alive, and I’m not the least bit ashamed to admit that! You girls all rock!
OMG, I love it! Do they have names yet?
Nope. I am terrible at naming things… almost every one of my characters was named by someone else!
I would suggest a naming contest, except who knows how that would turn out LOL
I’ll certainly entertain suggestions is anyone has them!
A naming contest would be the height of awesome.
Sparkly sponkledonkle ponycorns awaaaaaay!
That’s quite the collection of cuteness you’ve got there 🙂
Jealous, I am.
I hear the box set will be up for sale next Black Friday at ASDA…. 😉
I think for those cute little guys I might just chance it 🙂
So, nice to see the soft side of evil squirrel! Hey! I wanted to tell you, remember when we were talking on my blog about elementary school indoor games? My 9 year old grandson brought up an old, familiar one: “Heads’ Up, 7 Up!” I was again nostalgic, passing it on to you again!! Smiles, Robin
Yes!!! I can’t remember exactly how that was played, but that was even the name we used for it! Not quite as famous as Duck Duck Goose was….
chip chuup chip chhiip… peep into my space now, there is somebody there who is trying to get into the ES nest 🙂
Oh I am so happy to see them where they should be! Names are very hard to decide on. Rainbow donkey looks very protective! Great photos and the cartoon of them learning to fly is hilarious! 🙂
I’m sure something will come up for names eventually. Thank you so very much for the little ones!!! 🙂
Sparklebow (for the girl) and erm … Raincorn? Um … maybe Ponicorn? Ponkeycorn? Okay, well, Sparklebow! 😉
It’s hard to see the Ponicorn or Ponkeycorn without seeing….. porn! 😉
And that’s what makes the names fun! Personally I like Ponkeycorn – kind of gives it that retro Donkey Kong feel, yet still retains the look of a porn title, but can be argued that it’s a cute name – all at the same time! 😉
Sharon’s unicorns are absolutely adorable! I love her work, and I’m so honored to be a part of the donkicorn team. 🙂
As for naming them… you simply must use the Unicorn Name Generator at http://unicorn.namegeneratorfun.com/. It is hilarious… Here’s the description:
“The unicorn name generator creates names for male unicorns and female unicorns of all ages, it can be used for My Little Pony roleplay, for drag queens in a hurry, or to make any cool unicorn name… It’s the only unicorn name generator that includes descriptions of your unicorn and your unicorn’s personality. Friendship is magic, unicorn lovers!”
LOL! I will have to try this! This may be the winning idea!
Yay! I’m glad you like it, Grass Jolly Saddle.
You can call me Marigold Silky Lashes. 🙂
LMAO! Just now saw this and I’m loving it. Soooo cute! I should’ve asked for the pick of the litter earlier! I’ll ask the Things for ideas for names. I’m sure they’ll come up with something suitably bizarre. So glad you’re still lovin’ your sparkleponeh!
She continues to be classy, sassy, and just a little bit trashy! I will keep her foreveh!
