Some may think photography is boring, and squirrel photography in particular is too frustrating. But all of the hard work and patience can and will eventually pay off, as you’ve no doubt seen time and time again in my collection of squirrel prints. Tens of thousands of wasted shots will yield several hundred absolute keepers…. and occasionally, if the luck of every unicorn in existence is with you…. you just might capture something that can’t be anticipated. Like a near perfect shot of a squirrel in midleap onto a tree!
I was able to make trip #21 to the park on Thursday, and this was the crown jewel of that one hour tour. 209 photos taken…. only 53 worthy of being spared the delete button… and yet, totally worth it to get a shot like this! Sure there’s some blur, outside of perfect light conditions, a moving squirrel will always blur… but not enough that you can’t make out exactly what you’re seeing. I will get a little excited when I check the camera screen to see I got a really neat photo… but I actually did a rather animated fist pump when I discovered how perfect my timing was on this shot! Here’s to Saturday Squirrels worth celebrating!
Have a great weekend everyone!
That really is quite a special shot – and quite a leap for that guy too! Once in a while (when I don’t have my camera of course) I’ll see a squirrel make an impossible leap up in the trees from one tree to another for instance. My heart always stops…….they are such great athletes (or such crazy critters!).
Pam
This squirrel was doing huge leaps even while running on the ground! I was upset that I kept missing those…. but at least I got that last jump onto the tree! Now I just have to wait four years until the next Leap Day to use it again!
Maybe this leaper will be around and up to his leaping well before leap day!!
Very cool photo!
Thanks!
It almost looks like a spring. Is he related to Tigger?
Might be. And he probably just made off with something from Rabbit’s house…
Waht a photo! A great weekend for you, too. Here is Midsommer feast, started yesterday, now four drowned, two died in car accidents…a great weekend. Days are now getting shorter, so good bye light nights.
We will have our Fourth of July celebrations in two weeks, and the US will certainly top that toll of stupidity. Though the more rednecks who blow off their fingers lighting fireworks, the better I say….
So people are crazy everywhere.
That’s a Carl Lewis jump if I’ve ever seen one.
I’ll bet the squirrel would win the race to the top of the tree….
Super squirrel shot! 🙂
I could add a red cape and make it a Supersquirrel shot!
That’s actually pretty cool 🙂
I was immediately impressed by its unique coolness! And I’ve taken thousands of squirrel pictures in my life….
Wow. At first I thought it was a lizard, than I put on my reading glasses. Squirrels just amaze me the way they jump. It defies physics and all other laws of nature. I guess that is why squirrels have always been known as the outlaws of the rodent world.
LOL! Leaping lizards!!!
They are definitely an abnormality to physics. Maybe squirrels are not of this universe…
Wow! Nice shot! such a unique picture!
The Dog Hug
Thanks!
So here’s what I want to see. I want to see the very rare leaping squirrel on leap day! Even rarer, two lover squirrels leaping on leap day! Otherwise, awesome pic, ES!
I posted 29 leaping squirrels on Leap Day this year. And I did take some pictures that day, but the squirrels did not cooperate, probably because they don’t use a calendar…
It was not boring, it was a great action photo. Thank you for posting it.
