In 1973, the Mississippi River near St. Louis reached record flood levels. In 1993, the
Mississippi River near St. Louis topped those flood records. It seemed a given that we should be prepared for the entire Midwest to get swept away in 2013… but thanks to last year’s horrific drought, the river here is actually at historically low levels. We have gotten some gullywashers this winter in lieu of tons of snow, and the pictures of this week’s Saturday Squirrel were taken after one of those good soaking rains.
The flooding you see in the picture above is of the ditch that runs between my backyard and the houses on the next street over. During a real epic rain event, the water can get as high as the base of that tree you see that squirrel perched on. He doesn’t seem particularly worried about the ditch’s water levels as he nibbles on whatever tasty nuggets he can find under my tree….
Let’s take a closer look at our weekly honoree in that picture there….
Incidentally, that orangish mess you see there under the squirrel…. that’s the remnants of last year’s Squirrel O’Lantern…
Have a great, squirrelly Saturday!

I love your squirrel-O-lantern! I might just have to do one this year…
Thank you, and you should definitely try it! As much as I suck at most art media other than the computer and mouse, I really love the challenge of the pumpkin and knife! Nothing says Halloween like a scary glowing squirrel on the porch…. 🙂
What a lovely fellow and such a fine handsome tail!

You rock my friend!! 🙂
He’s a total cutie!! And definitely a cool customer — totally unworried about anything life might toss his way. Just one of the many things to love about squirrels. 🙂
Excellent observation!
