Wild Kingdom

Today, we feature the untamed squirrel in its natural habitat.

sqturday squirrel logoPhotographing wildlife can be a quite fun, fulfilling, and even dangerous hobby.  Many of the pictures I’ve taken of my bushy tailed little friends have come from the relative safety of one of my rear windows that overlooks the backyard jungle.  Every once in a while, though, I load up the camera and venture to the city park where the squirrels are wild, free and plentiful.  Among the many suburban furry creatures I ran into while on safari this past Wednesday morning was the critter I’m featuring as this week’s Saturday Squirrel.

Oh no. Not another nosy human.

Oh no. Not another nosy human.

I wasn’t but maybe 15 feet or so below him taking pictures as he made a meal out of a huge nut he scored.  I managed a couple of nice shots of him before he finally noticed me…

Time to grab my nuts and get out of here.

Time to grab my nuts and get out of here.

Shortly after his gaze first met the lens of my camera, he hightailed it up tree and well out of my view.  Once I realized I wouldn’t be getting anymore pictures of him, I turned around and started to walk away to look for more photogenic prey to stalk.  That’s when I heard something hard hit the ground not even a foot to my left.

The ungrateful little bastard threw his nut at me!!!!!!!!!!!

Nuts to you, Creep!

Nuts to you, Creep!

Crikey!  Now I know how Steve Irwin felt!  Fear not, however, I will not allow this spirited sciurine to keep The Squirrel Hunter from bringing home more spectacular images for your Saturday enjoyment.

Have a great weekend everyone, and keep an eye to the skies!

  1. I agree… not even crocodile dundee had to fear nuts on his nut :o) but maybe that was an ivitation to share lunch with that guy?

  2. PigLove says:

WOW!? He threw his nut at you huh? I’m trying to keep a straight piggy face with that one but I can’t. Snorts with piggy laughter. XOXO – Bacon

  3. Yes, the DO throw things. Beautiful photos of that little stinker.

And as I write this I can hear squirrels who have moved into the walls of my house. Not sure what I’m going to do about it.

    • Uh oh. That isn’t good. I love the little guys, but they are not welcome in any part of my house… including the parts I can’t see. Given that they use my roof as a shortcut to get from the backyard tree to the front yard tree, I’m surprised they haven’t found a way to get into my attic yet…. but if they did, I would take no prisoners.

The squirrels used to throw things at my dogs. They loved to irritate them. 😉 Then they would laugh and laugh! Were you laughed at too? 😉

    • I was chirped at the entire time I was at the park! This guy definitely let his feelings with me be known. And a little later on, I had a poor squirrel “trapped” in a small, leafless tree that wasn’t near enough to another tree for him to escape. The whole time I took pictures of him, another squirrel was barking his head off at me from a nearby tree… or maybe he was laughing at the predicament his friend got into! 😉

Wow, I didn’t realise the risks you take to bring us Saturday Squirrel :-). And cute photos! I’m surprised at that squirrel trying to end you, he doesn’t look the type.

    • Never underestimate the evilness that lies behind the cute face! It would be just my luck to one day get myself killed by a nut to the temple while trying to take Saturday Squirrel pictures…

  6. gh0stpupp3t says:

    *twitch* Squirrely whirlies! *twitch*

  7. Too funny! Great camera work though.

  8. Trisha says:

Lol! I can’t believe he threw a nut at you! I would have to say you got the last laugh though. The nut missed you and you got some great pictures. I love all of these. The nut-throwing little dude looks so cute sitting in the crook of that tree!

  9. 1jaded1 says:

I will not laugh…I will not laugh…Hahaha. I think I lost in one of your comment section competition things. It involved throwing a nut…thank you squirrel and ES for the laugh.

    • Ha! That had to be the picture I posted of the squirrel’s head peeking from around the tree trunk with a nut in his mouth, and asked for captions. I had to go back and look at what you wrote…

After realizing he could spit nuts with distance AND accuracy, Bushy uses his newly found skill on those pesky humans, and revels every time they ask, “Where the fuck did that come from?”

HaHa! You know what the late great Steve Irwin knew! Whatever the critters chuck at you, you just keep taking pictures. Crikey! Indeed. Great shots by the way. Love what looks like indignation mid chew! 😀

  11. A great squirrel fix for the squirrel-less. You have brightened my Sunday afternoon 🙂

    • See. If this squirrel would have just realized how much happiness he could bring people all over the world, maybe he wouldn’t have been so upset at having his picture taken. But, noooooooo….

  12. Glad he missed. lol It hurts to get pelted with nuts by a squirrel.

  13. Quirky Girl says:

Perhaps that particular squirrel had once been the subject of a paparazzi frenzy, and the nut-throwing was merely a reflex?

  14. LOL. Mine only throw themselves at the house door or windows to get my attention when they want peanuts. I’ve never had them throw stuff at me. They do scold the neighborhood cats, though.

  15. I think squirrels are extra cute 🙂

  16. I need to take my camera to our retreat house and photo the squirrels who scurry around up there for you. There are loads. None here at the Priory, they all seem to have scarpered, sadly.
